St. Giles House has been a family home to the Earls of Shaftesbury and their descendants since the thirteenth century. It was also a home to the philosopher John Locke and frequently visited by the composer Handel. Sadly, like many English country houses it fell into a period of disrepair following the Second Word War and the family were forced to move out. It remained shuttered up for 30 years during which time it appeared on the English Heritage “Buildings at Risk” register and came perilously close to collapse.

In 2005, Nicholas Ashley-Cooper became the 12th Earl of Shaftesbury after the tragic death of his father and older brother. Inspired by his ancestors and determined to make St. Giles House a family home once again, he and his wife Dinah, embarked on a 12-year restoration project to bring St. Giles House back to life.

The restoration has since won, the 2014 Georgian Group Awards for the Restoration of a Georgian Country House, the 2015 Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Award for Building Conservation, the 2015 Historic Houses Association/Sotheby’s Restoration Award and the Historic England Angel Award, Best Rescue of a Historic Building or Site.
