04 Oct - 19 Oct - Hope for the Wild Camels: an Auction for their survival
Read more ...
The Wild Camel Protection Foundation auction is a truly unique and
vital event, raising essential funds for one of the rarest and most endangered
animals on our planet – the Wild Camel (Camelus ferus).
The Wild Camel Protection Foundation (WCPF) is the only charity in
the world solely dedicated to protecting the Wild Camel, a species that has
survived against incredible odds in the harsh deserts of China and Mongolia.
With fewer than 1,000 camels left in the wild, these remarkable animals are
more endangered than giant pandas and are under constant threat from habitat
loss, human encroachment, and competition for scarce water sources.
This auction plays a pivotal role in supporting the Foundation’s
ground-breaking conservation work. Proceeds will go directly towards the
ongoing development and operation of our second breeding centre – a critical
expansion of WCPF’s efforts. The first centre has already shown extraordinary
success in safeguarding the genetic future of the wild camel, and the second
facility, now established, is essential to ensure their long-term survival. It
will:
Provide greater capacity for carefully managed breeding programs.
Increase genetic diversity among the captive population.
Serve as an insurance population should disaster strike in the
wild.
Create more opportunities for future reintroductions into their
native desert habitat.
By taking part in this auction, you are not only bidding on unique
and remarkable items – you are joining us, the ONLY charity in the world
dedicated to saving the wild camel from extinction. This is more than an
auction: it is a chance to directly contribute to the survival of a species
found nowhere else on earth. Every bid helps secure the future of the wild
camel and ensures that generations to come will still know of its existence.

Crafted with extraordinary attention to anatomy and expression, the miniature camels appear to follow one another in graceful rhythm, their story adding depth and poignancy to the work. Though petite in scale, the sculpture radiates both elegance and narrative power. With limited availability and Le May’s renowned artistry, this is more than a decorative object—it is a rare opportunity to acquire a moving moment of animal life in bronze.
RRP £4550
About Camilla Le May
Camilla discovered her passion for clay modelling from a young age. A pivotal moment came in 1996 when Sir Eduardo Paolozzi encouraged her to pursue sculpting more seriously during a masterclass at Edinburgh College of Art. She then went on to study at Chelsea College of Art, and has been exhibiting since around 2000.
Camilla typically models in clay or wax before casting into bronze. She is deeply involved in the process—from working at a bronze foundry to overseeing final waxwork, chasing, and patinas herself
Raised on her parents’ farm and deeply tied to animal life, she often works from live subjects. She has spent significant time in African game reserves, sculpting in situ to capture authentic movement and behaviour
Her work is held in private and royal collections. She has earned accolades from the British Sporting Art Trust, the Society of Wildlife Artists, and was shortlisted for the David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year
She was the inaugural Artist in Residence at the Royal Veterinary College, where anatomical study and motion research informed her sculptures—including the life-size bronze of Sefton, the Household Cavalry horse, unveiled by HRH The Princess Royal.

Camilla Le May’s “Baby Camel (Little Bronze Resting/Kneeling statue)” is a small—and undeniably enchanting—bronze sculpture that captures the calmness of a camel calf at rest. In just 7 cm × 13.5 cm × 9 cm. This piece is a delightful testament to her talent for capturing life and quiet emotion in bronze. As a sculptor deeply rooted in observational realism and animal anatomy, her work resonates with both artistic finesse and heartfelt connection to the natural world.
RRP £1450
About the Artist: Camilla Le May
Le May holds a degree in History of Art but later turned her focus back to her first passion, sculpture. She works primarily in clay or wax before transforming her models into bronze—ranging from small-scale pieces to monumental works.
Renowned for her portrayals of animals—both wild and domestic—Le May is highly skilled at observing her subjects in the wild. Often working plein-air, she has spent extended periods in locations like Kenya, sculpting from life, sometimes from the back of an adapted Land Rover. This immersive method gives her work an authentic sense of movement and character.
She has exhibited widely since the early 2000s and is collected internationally, even by members of the UK Royal Family. She’s received awards from the British Sporting Art Trust and the Society of Wildlife Artists, and has been shortlisted for the David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year.
Le May was the inaugural Artist in Residence at the Royal Veterinary College, where she created a life-sized bronze of Sefton, the Household Cavalry horse. The unveiling was attended by HRH The Princess Royal. During her residency, she benefited from anatomy and motion labs, enhancing her understanding of anatomical form and movement.

Lenny also provided the same ingredients again for me to try at home and has also since sent me the recipes"

John Hare was one of the last great desert explorers of the 20th century and co-founder of the Wild Camel Protection Foundation, established to save the critically endangered wild Bactrian camel. His expeditions across the Gobi and Lop Nur deserts were as much feats of survival as they were acts of conservation, leading to the recognition of the wild camel as a distinct species and the creation of large protected reserves in China and Mongolia.
The Lost Camels of Tartary is his dramatic account of hazardous journeys across the Gobi in search of the elusive wild camel, blending adventure with zoological discovery.
Mysteries of the Gobi combines natural history, archaeology and exploration, describing Hare’s discovery of unmapped valleys, ancient cities and wildlife untouched by man, while highlighting the urgent plight of the wild camel.
Last Man In is a memoir of his early career in Northern Nigeria as the last recruit to the Colonial Service, offering a candid picture of life and politics at the very end of Empire.
Together, these volumes chart John’s remarkable trajectory from colonial officer to world-renowned conservationist. Each is signed by the author, offering not just collectible travel literature but a tangible link to the history of the Wild Camel Protection Foundation and its extraordinary mission.

3. jumblebee continues to bid on your behalf, whenever you are outbid by another member's bid, until your maximum bid is exceeded or the auction is won.
4. jumblebee will notify you by email if your maximum bid is outbid by another member and provided the auction is still running, you will then have a chance to enter a new maximum bid if you wish.
