An evening of music and dance evoking the rich and varied colours of Spain.
Throughout history, music and dance have been at the heart of Spanish culture. Flamenco is just one part of the music and dance of this rich and varied culture.
World renowned artists, classical guitarist Xuefei Yang & Spanish dancer Maria Vega, join their talents to celebrate this rich and broad heritage of Spanish music and dance : from flamenco to danza estilizada (classical Spanish dance), performed to the music of the greatest Spanish composers (Albeniz, Falla, Granados) on that quintessential Spanish instrument, the guitar.
Join them this summer's night in an intimate setting, one guitarist and one dancer, on a journey through the music and dance of Spain - a Spanish Rhapsody !
About the Artists
Beijing born Xuefei Yang is one of the world’s finest classical guitarists. She was the first-ever guitarist in China to enter a music school, & became the first internationally recognised Chinese guitarist on the world stage. Her debut in Madrid at the age of 14 was attended by the composer Joaquín Rodrigo. Her international success has led her performing in over 50 countries. Xuefei has made many albums for major labels (EMI, Decca). Her first recording received a gold disc & her second was selected as ‘Editor’s Choice’ in Gramophone magazine, who also praised Xuefei as one of the leading innovators of her generation for continuing to build the guitar repertoire.
"Yang's guitar sings as if she had grown up in the shaded courtyards of Andalusia. "
NEW YORK TIMES
Maria Vega is a world renowned flamenco dancer, and choreographer. Maria was born in Madrid where she was schooled in Spanish dance, flamenco and contemporary dance, and went on to graduate from both the Royal Dance Conservatory in Madrid, and the renowned Madrid flamenco studio “Amor de Dios.” As a professional artist, Maria has worked across Europe, USA and Asia. Currently based in London, where she has her own dance company, “Maria Vega Dance Company,” Maria is the subject of the recent documentary, “Spanish Dancer, London Life.”
Vega is tall, elegant and charismatic, vivaciously expressing the twin peaks of flamenco’s joy and anguish. The clarity of compás in her zapateado is exceptional, but the same could be said of her effortless turns, plasticity of spine, the soft undulating patterns of her hands and arms and the fiery ebullience of her attack”.
