Pete Stuttard drew this picture. It is of course based on the very well known photograph of Tom Crean when he was on ITAE / Endurance expedition with Shackleton. Peter is not the only one who has done a drawing based on this photograph of course. The picture was drawn as part of his prep for modelling Tom. The model is circa 24 inches tall and is off to the foundry for casting in bronze.

THE NIMROD MURDERS by Simon Beaufort
On 30 July 1907, members of the British Antarctic Expedition, led by Ernest Shackleton, sailed down the Thames on the tiny, refurbished sealer Nimrod. Some six months later, in February 1908, the expedition landed in Antarctica. At Cape Royds, Shackleton and his companions built a hut and set up camp. They then began their long wait for the following spring, when Shackleton would head into the icy unknown in an attempt to become the first man ever to reach the South Pole. In the worldwide fame and glory that followed the return of Shackleton’s party to civilisation, little was ever said about a dark incident that almost halted the expedition before it ever sailed from London’s East India Docks. On the eve of departure of the Nimrod to the Antarctic, the body of the assistant biologist was found in the East India Docks. Without a doubt he had been murdered. Raymond Priestly, just short of his 21st birthday, had been appointed expedition geologist and was one of the first on the scene and it fell to him to undertake an investigation, along with Inspector William Taylor, an old school friend of Shackleton’s, into the events surrounding this dark deed. He had no knowledge of the danger into which he would soon be plunged.
Simon Beaufort is a pseudonym for a pair of academics formerly at the Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge. One is an award-winning historian, the other a successful crime writer, who publishes under the name Susanna Gregory.

The Lost Photographs Of Captain Scott by David M Wilson (Hardback)
Captain Scott perished with four of his fellow explorers on their return from the South Pole in March 1912. Almost immediately the myth was founded, based on Scott's diaries, turning him into an icon of courage in the face of impossible circumstances. But during the final months of that journey Scott also took a series of breath-taking photographs: panoramas of the continent, superb depictions of mountains and formations of ice and snow, and photographs of the explorers on the polar trail. But these photos have never been seen - initially fought over, neglected, then lost - until now, that is. For the first time, they are resurrected and are a humbling testament to the men whose graves still lie unmarked in the vastness of the Great Alone.

Cherry: A Life of Apsley Cherry-Garrard by Sara Wheeler (Paperback)
Apsley Cherry-Garrard (1886-1959) was one of the youngest members of Captain Scott's final expedition to the Antarctic. Cherry, despite his short sight, undertook an epic journey in the Antarctic winter to collect the eggs of the Emperor penguin. The temperature fell to 70 degrees below zero, it was dark all the time, his teeth shatterd in the cold and the tent blew away. But we kept our tempers, Cherry wrote, even with God . After serving in World War I, Cherry was invalided home, and with the encouragement of his neighbour, Bernard Shaw, he wrote about his adventures in The Worst Journey in the World . This book freed Scott's story from the shackles of its period, and since its publication in 1922, the bitter brilliance and elegiac melancholy of Cherry's prose has touched the hearts of thousands of readers. In his work, Cherry transformed tragedy and grief into something fine. But he was to find that life is more complicated than literature, and as the years unravelled he faced a terrible struggle against depression, breakdown and despair, haunted by the possibility that he could have saved Scott and his companions.

Poles Apart - Richard Pape
Five thousand miles in under five days - The story of Richard Pape's phenomenal drive from Vancouver to Fairbanks, Alaska and back in the record time of under five days - then across Canada - then completely encircling the United States and his first hand account of today's grim battle for Antarctica. Ninety Degrees North: The Quest For The North Pole - Fergus Fleming
In the mid-nineteenth century the North Pole was a mystery. Some believed that it was an island of basalt in a warm crystal sea. Explorers who tried to penetrate the icy wastes failed or died. But after Sir John Franklin disappeared with all his men in 1845, serious efforts began to be made to find the true northernmost point of the globe. Fergus Fleming’s book is a vivid, witty history of the disasters that ensued. The new explorers included Elisha Kane, a sickly man and useless commander, who led his team close to death in 1854, and Charles Hall, a printer from Ohio. Hall made the mistake of taking an experienced crew, who refused to commit suicide for him. Their mutiny so enraged Hall that he died of a stroke, and some of his crew escaped south on an ice floe. They were followed by the Germans, newly united and eager for their place in the ice, the Austro-Hungarians and the British, who in 1876 managed to get further than any other expedition, travelling over terrain later explorers considered impassable. They left the field to the Norwegians, to expeditions organized by the American tabloid press, Swedish baloonists, aristocratic Italians and finally to the obsessive Robert Peary, who on one trip took his pregnant wife with him in order to set a record for the most northerly birth in history. He finally made it in 1909.

I May Be Some Time - Francis Spufford
I May Be Some Time is a richly engrossing cultural history of our obsession with ice, Eskimos and polar exploration.
When Captain Scott died in 1912 on his way back from the South Pole, his story became a myth embedded in the national imagination. Despite wars and social change, despite recent debunking, it is still there. Everyone remembers the doomed explorers' last words - 'I'm just going outside, and I may be some time' - and history is what you can remember.
Conventional histories of polar exploration trace the laborious expeditions across the map, dwelling on the proper techniques of ice-navigation and sledge-travel. But we rarely ask what the explorers thought they were doing, or why they did these insane things.
I May Be Some Time is about the poles as they have been perceived, dreamed, even desired. It explores the myth as myth, showing how Scott's death was the culmination to a long-running national enchantment with perilous journeys to the ends of the earth.
'The thrills of desolation, of icy beauty, of challenge, of human courage, of comradeship . . . I May Be Some Time is a truly majestic work of scholarship, thought and literary imagination.' Jan Morris, The Times

Climbing the Pole: Edmund Hillary & the Trans-Antarctic Expedition 1955-1958
In 1957 on the Antarctic Plateau Sir Edmund Hillary, the great New Zealand mountaineer, raced his expedition leader, Vivian Fuchs, to the South Pole for reasons that were never fully explained. Hillarys spin was that the Pole was there and he had time and fuel to get there first: so he did. Hillarys actions threw Fuchs Trans Antarctic Expedition into confusion. When he then suggested that Fuchs halt his march across Antarctica at the Pole and return a year later to complete the historic crossing, Hillary appeared to be approaching a state of mutiny on the ice: he was roundly criticised by many interested in Antarctic affairs, except that at home in New Zealand his spin took root and has never been vigorously challenged. Examining records that could more fully explain why Hillary acted as he did took the writer into part of the history of the TAE: the part that somehow had escaped close examination for around half a century. John Thomson is also the author of the highly acclaimed Elephant Island & Beyond, The Life and Diaries of Thomas Orde Lees.

Antarctica - Reginald Ford
This is probably the rarest of all first-hand accounts of Scott's Discovery Expedition. Ford was a steward on the expedition and is notable mainly for being the first man to break his leg skiing in the Antarctic. Upon the Expedition's return Ford acted as Scott's secretary during the leader's lecture tour. Some of his photographs were used by Scott in The Voyages of the 'Discovery'. He moved to New Zealand in 1906 and began to study architecture and later became a partner in one of that country's most prestigious firms. Antarctica was published privately in 1908 and this is a facsimile of his original booklet. Ford, in a letter to a friend in 1963,confirmed that Scott himself gave him permission firstly to lecture in England and then later in Canada and Australia and also to write a book. He said I should quite probably have done these things without consent but I preferred to ask anyway. The booklet is 32 pages in length and has thirteen pictures. It is 150mm x 110mm (6 x 4.5 The cover is linen-textured card. Presented in a black gift box it also contains a facsimile of a 4pp 1905 brochure (295 x 210mm) detailing the author s lectures in Australia and a 12pp pamphlet of biographical details, newspaper articles and pictures. Two Antarctic postcards are also included. The print run is limited to 400 copies. This is a very unusual piece of Antarctic history.

When bidding on an auction item, if you enter more than the minimum increment for an item then your bid will be used for proxy bidding. This is how it works:
1. You enter the absolute maximum that you are willing to bid for an item.
2. jumblebee places a bid on your behalf, using the minimum amount required to make you the highest bidder, i.e. current bid price plus bid increment OR the reserve price, if there is one and it can be covered by your proxy bid.
3. jumblebee continues to bid on your behalf, whenever you are outbid by another member's bid, until your maximum bid is exceeded or the auction is won.
4. jumblebee will notify you by email if your maximum bid is outbid by another member and provided the auction is still running, you will then have a chance to enter a new maximum bid if you wish.
For example:
The current bid on an auction item is £100. The minimum increment is £10. You enter a bid of £150 (your maximum bid).
Using your bid, but increasing only by the minimum increment, jumblebee sets the current bid to £110.
Another person bids £130 but they are immediately outbid by jumblebee bidding on your behalf and the current bid goes up to £140.
The auction finishes and you have won the auction item at a price of £140.
