Irish Guards Benevolent Fund (registered no. 247477)

A fund-raising campaign to boost the ability of the Regiment to assist current and former members and their families, when needed, was launched over 10 years ago. Since then a steady series of events and activities has resulted in a massive boost to our ability to provide welfare support and has provided the lifeline to our ever-increasing level of charitable giving. It would of course be very wrong to assume our charitable funds are only available for those who have been injured as a result of active service. We are a close knit Irish Family Regiment and we will provide assistance, if needed, to anyone who is either currently serving or has served in our ranks in the past. Some examples of the type of requests we deal with are as follows:

  • The provision of an electric powered wheelchair to a former Irish Guardsman who served in the 1970s.

  • Emergency funding to help a serving Guardsman fly to visit his ill mother who lives abroad.

  • Household goods to help a married couple who have had to relocate after being medically discharged from the army.

  • Travel and accommodation expenses for a group of widows and families of the bereaved to witness the Irish Guards taking part in this year’s Trooping the Colour.

  • Home adaptions to help a disabled veteran to install a downstairs wet room.

  • Private medical consultancy fees for a veteran suffering from PTSD

  • Assistance with expenses to allow a disabled veteran to travel from N Ireland to London in order to attend the 10th Anniversary memorial service of his friend who was killed in action in Iraq

  • Ongoing financial help for two amputees to train and compete in the Invictus Games

Our fund-raising efforts over the last 10 years have been going strong and we have had massive support from across the entire community especially from both sides of the Irish border. With the drawdown from Afghanistan now complete there is a perception that we will see a similar reduction in the level of financial support towards military charities which is why we plan to continue to keep the issue high on the agenda

For many the physical war might be over but the mental war will have to be fought for a long time yet.
