Keep Bridge Alive Pro-Am Auction Conditions
1.All the expert participants of the main event
will be available as partners sold by auction, except for David Burn, Liz
McGowan, Neil Rosen and Stefan Skorchev who are raffle prizes.
2.The Pro-Am
tournament is open to bridge players of all skill levels.
Bidders will
receive a notification if they are outbid.
4.Bidding starts from £275. All successful bids entitle the partnership to the reception drinks, dinner and wine, and taking part in the Pro-Am bridge tournament. A competing bid must be
£25 or £50 higher than the preceding bid, depending on the expert. A
bidder can decide to bid anonymously or publicly. In case of the latter the name of the bidder
will be displayed on the website next to the name of the player the bid has
been placed on.
5.In the case of two identical bids the first bid will be deemed the
winning bid and the other party will receive a notification. In case of bids made in the last 5 minutes
before the auction closes, 15 minutes will be added for that particular player,
which will be repeated should yet another bid arrive within the last 5 minutes.
6.If a bidder wins more than one pro by the end of the auction due to
multiple bids, the bidder will have two pros to dispose of since all bids are binding.
7.The auction opens Monday 4 November 2019 at 12.00 and closes on Friday 7 February 2020 at 12.00 BMT. Bids
received after this time will not be valid.
9.In addition to participation in the Pro-Am, the auction fee includes a sparkling
wine reception, drinks and a fork buffet before the tournament and prizes post
tournament. The event starts at 6pm with the bridge and prizes finishing around 11pm, and the bar open for mingling until midnight.
10.Sponsors of the event and KBA Patrons have the right to select a partner according to
their contribution. That player will no
longer be available for public auction.
11.Payment (by credit card, bank transfer or cheque) is due before playing in
the event on Thursday 20 February 2020.
With special thanks to the Pro-Am Committee including Kitty Teltscher, Pauline van Luven, Monica Davis, Stephen Peterkin and Sally Brock. Many thanks also to Briony Brock, Christina Lund Madsen, Tove Goddard, Peter Hasenson and Shireen Mohandes for their support and insight from previous Pro-Am events. Grateful acknowledgement to the EBU, WBF and DBF for some of the photos and bios of the players.
The man hardly needs an introduction. The charismatic Pakistani is perhaps the most famous bridge player in the world, equally known for his imaginative play and sparkling personality.
In 1981 Pakistan, a small nation bridgewise, reached the final of the Bermuda Bowl, and it was obvious to the world to whom they owed their success.
Since the early 90's Zia has represented the United States, winning the World Championship in 2009. He is extremely popular among the kibitzers because he enjoys joking and involving them in his thoughts during the play.
And you can be certain that Zia is always the best-dressed man in the room.

Sabine is the only woman in the bridge world to have achieved the goal of being regarded as a peer by her male competitors. To put it in the words of an anonymous top player with a glimpse in his eyes: "Roy and Sabine shouldn't be allowed to play in the mixed." Among their many victories, the highlights were capturing the Vanderbilt in 2013 along with the European Open Pairs, Sabine being the first woman ever to win the event.
When she is not attending a tournament somewhere in the world, Sabine lives in Denmark with her two adolescent sons.

Roy Welland
Roy Welland has probably won more titles with Sabine than with all his previous partners combined, starting with their Vanderbilt Victory in 2013. Three months later the pair won the European Open Pairs, and they keep adding titles to their resumé. It is difficult to find a tournament where they don’t do well.
Although a modest consumer himself, Welland is a wine enthusiast with an outstanding collection and owner of a vineyard in Italy. Roy has seen most parts of the world and according to him, Copenhagen with its combination of charming canals, history and fine dining is the best city in the world.

Though he looks as young as ever, Brogeland's list of merits is longer than the articles he writes. Next to his career as a bridge professional he is the editor of a popular Norwegian bridge magazine. He has been part of the team during all Norway's bridge triumphs, both as a junior and adult. He is a world champion, a European champion and even a mix champion - partnering his wife, who also represents Norway on the women's side.
In September this year he won a bronze medal at the Bermuda Bowl in China in a play-off against the USA in a nail biting finish. It was such a close match that Boye said: "That bronze felt like gold!"

I started playing bridge with my parents when I was 14. Then I went to Nottingham University, joined the bridge club there and played in my first Lady Milne, with Sally Eggett, in 1976. I played in my first European Championship in 1979 with Sandra Landy, which we won. And we won again in 1981 and also the Venice Cup that year. The British women won the world championship again in 1985.
In 1993 I gave up any interest in international bridge to have two children, but started playing again in. I formed a partnership with Margaret Courtney and we won the European Championship in 2001 in Tenerife. In 2003 and 2004 I played with Kitty Teltscher. Our best performance resulted in a bronze medal in the 2004 Olympiad in Istanbul.
At the end of 2008 I was brought in to form a scratch partnership with Nicola Smith in order to join the England Women's team for the World Mind Sports Games, where we won the gold medal. We then became a regular partnership, played in four European Championships with medals in 2012 (gold), 2014 (silver) and 2016 (gold). We also won the world women’s teams in Lille in 2012, Sanya in 2014 and Orlando in 2018. In 2017 we changed partnerships and I was runner-up in the Venice Cup in partnership with Fiona Brown.
Nowadays I make living mostly by professional bridge of one sort or another: writing (I am the columnist for the Sunday Times, and also write for Mr Bridge), playing and teaching online.
Sally received the Diamond Award from the EBU in November 2017 in recognition of her outstanding contribution to England's international teams. In 2019 Sally was inducted into the European Hall of Fame.

David was born in Perth, Scotland on September 10th 1979. David started to get seriously into bridge in 1999 when he had just turned 19. He began working as a host at the St John's Wood Bridge Club, and in 2000 started a partnership with Tom Townsend who had been taught to play as a school boy by David's father!
David has since formed partnerships with Tony Forrester and David Bakhshi and has represented England with them numerous times in the European Championships (winning a bronze medal in 2014 - later upgraded to a silver medal following the disqualification of the winning Israeli team), Bermuda Bowl (finishing 4th in 2015 after two extremely narrow defeats in the semi-final and bronze medal play-off), and World Olympiad.
In 2017 he was part of a team which won a bronze medal in the Transnational competition at the World Teams Championships. David has numerous domestic titles on his bridge CV, including victory in the Gold Cup three times, Premier League seven times, and the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Spring Foursomes. He was the winner of the inaugural Player of the Year Championship for the 2014/15 season. He is now partnering Andrew Robson.

Artur Malinowski
Artur Malinowski was born in Poland, moved to Norway and then England where he is now a full-time bridge professional. He won the silver medal at the 2007 European Pairs in Antalya, and was in the England Open team that took the silver medal in the World Mind sport Games in Beijing in 2008. He also has two bronze medals in the European Mixed Teams, and has won Crockfords as well as the Gold Cup.
My involvement with the game started by chance: I read a bridge book together with a friend from football at the age of 17, and I have not stopped learning and playing since. When I was in Norway, I worked for the Norwegian Bridge Federation and for a while I was the editor of the national bridge magazine. This was a welcome change from the odd jobs I had had to do for the first few years after leaving Poland with very little money in my pocket – and proof that an ear for languages helps in all walks of life. I am fairly fluent in seven languages, and I sport a proud Polish accent in all of them. This is not a problem in England, where people are tolerant, and it is this tolerance that, to me, represents the major charm of this country. I came to visit for two weeks nine years ago and I still live here very happily.

Barry was born in London on 14 October 1951 and learnt to play bridge at Wanstead County High School. He got a book from the library and taught three others the game; coming last in the Parents' Association Bridge Drive but winning on the next attempt. Barry then went to Manchester University where he was fortunate enough to play with a number of players who went on to represent their country.
He has made one previous Camrose appearance with Robert Sheehan in 1986 and then gave up the game for a number of years when he read for the Bar. He is still a practicing criminal barrister and between that and playing bridge he have little time for other hobbies. However now that Barry is in partnership with Sally Brock, both at and away from the table, he believes that further success is only just around the corner.

Mike, 35, is one of England's leading players. In the past four years, he has won three Spring Foursomes and three Premier Leagues, all in partnership with David Gold; most recently, they added the Gold Cup to that list. He has also won a number of major events around the world.
Mike has recently embarked on a new regular partnership with Ben Norton, 22, a future star of the game, and is confident they will enjoy similar success together.
When he isn't playing tournaments, he can be found playing professionally in clubs around London. He lives in Shepherd's Bush with his wife, Sarah, herself an England international.

Norman learnt bridge at the age of 14 and was taught mainly by a player called Paul Gordon, whose better half Fritzi was half of the best women’s pair of all time. He played mostly high stake rubber bridge with the likes of John Collings, an ailing Jonathan Cansino, an embryonic Zia Mahmood, Paul Hackett and Geoffrey Breskal, amongst many others! It didn’t do much for Norman’s bidding in that company, but his card play became very sound – it had to be!
When he converted to duplicate he won all the major competitions more than once, with the exception of the Gold Cup, which he is hoping to add very soon.

Jeremy has been playing bridge since 1968 and is a Premier Grandmaster. An early congress saw him playing with a school partner against Omar Sharif. This would have been a pleasurable occasion were it not for the fact that his partner's father who was watching and was an occasional solo player thought it appropriate to try to teach Omar's partner (a leading French international) some of the finer points of bridge.
He has won quite a few domestic trophies, represented England in a winning Camrose team and won a gold Medal in the European Transnational Championships. Has just stopped being chairman of the EBU after six years (the maximum sentence)!

She then went on to play in the Women's U26 team in the Channel Trophy the following month. She was then part of the Under 16 team that performed well at the World Youth Team Championships in 2016, finishing 8th and winning more than half of their matches in the round robin phase.
Jasmine won the Under 19 Championship Pairs in 2015, and defended her title in 2016 (when it was then for those Under 21) playing with her brother Liam Sanderson.

India Leeming - JUNIOR
India was first taught how to play bridge by her grandfather at the age of 11 but began playing regularly at 18, when she joined the Cambridge University Bridge Club. This led to her joining the England Junior Squad in 2015 and making her international debut in the Junior European Pairs Championships in 2016. She has played for England several times since, including a very successful outing in the Junior World Championships in 2019, where she and her partner Hanna Tuus came a close 4th in the Pairs.
Since graduating in Linguistics from Cambridge, she went on to do a Master’s degree in Computational Linguistics at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. She has now moved to London to live with Shahzaad Natt (her full-time life partner and occasional bridge partner) and is currently teaching and playing bridge full-time.
When not playing bridge, India likes to learn languages. She combines her interests by translating for a mobile bridge app, as well as doing more general translation work

I am 15 years old and started to learn some bridge aged 8 at my school bridge club. I started to take it seriously when the Oxford Junior Bridge Club was opened in September 2014. I have played ever since and like to play as often as I can.
I have been lucky enough to represent England at u16 level several times. Since then I have played bridge in many different venues across the world.
My family didn’t play bridge at all when I started, but my mum has now learnt after me, and starting at school meant I still had a way to learn, for which I am very grateful.

Charles ”Charlie” Bucknell is an enthusiast of all things to do with classics, bridge and halo. Having previously been both a bridge and chess player, four years at Durham university guided him towards the correct path and he has now represented England on the U26 team in international tournaments on multiple occasions. Never afraid of experimenting with system or solving squeeze problems, I would caution any player who plays believing Charlie’s weak 2 vulnerable openings ‘must surely have at least one honour’.
Charlie started working for the EBU as Tournaments Administrator at the beginning of September 2019, perhaps with the ulterior motive of finding more tournaments that he could enter.

When bidding on an auction item, if you enter more than the minimum increment for an item then your bid will be used for proxy bidding. This is how it works:
1. You enter the absolute maximum that you are willing to bid for an item.
2. jumblebee places a bid on your behalf, using the minimum amount required to make you the highest bidder, i.e. current bid price plus bid increment OR the reserve price, if there is one and it can be covered by your proxy bid.
3. jumblebee continues to bid on your behalf, whenever you are outbid by another
member's bid, until your maximum bid is exceeded or the auction is won.
4. jumblebee will notify you by email if your maximum bid is outbid by another member and provided the auction is still running, you will then have a chance to enter a new
maximum bid if you wish.
For example:
The current bid on an auction item is £100. The minimum increment is £10. You enter a bid of £150 (your maximum bid).
Using your bid, but increasing only by the minimum increment, jumblebee sets the current bid to £110.
Another person bids £130 but they are immediately outbid by jumblebee bidding on your behalf and the current bid goes up to £140.
The auction finishes and you have won the auction item at a price of £140.
