The Unicorn Singers
(with authentic string band)
present their Advent Concert:
"In dulci Jubilo"
Exciting baroque settings which capture the expectant wonder of Christmas including stunning music by Buxtehude, Bach, Schütz and Biber.
We kick-start the season of great expectation with some suitably refreshing
sounds from the 17th century.
Dietrich Buxtehude's delightful but little-performed Christmas pieces include such favourites as In Dulci Jubilo but also other miniature masterpieces that display his engaging and effervescent style.
Alongside this great predecessor of J. S. Bach, we hear more charming works from his contemporaries: Geist, Theile and Biber, the latter a pioneer of baroque writing in Salzburg.
Our sequence includes some novel settings of some well-known seasonal chorales such as "How Brightly shines the morning star" (Wie Schon Leuchtet) and "From Heaven on high" (Von Himmel Hoch). We also feature some wonderful works from Heinrich Schütz’s vast output; a composer who always has something original and captivating to say.
Along the way we will explore many varied instrumental and vocal colours encompassing the contrasting rhythms of dance and lilting lullaby.
Do come and hear this seasonal box of delights.
Dietrich Buxtehude: In Dulci Jubilo; Das Neugeborne Kindelein;
Cantate Domino; Befiehl dem Engel
Heinrich Biber: Magnificat in G minor
