From 1997 until 2000, Parker Bowles was a junior publicist for Dennis Davidson Associates public relations firm. In 2001, he was one of the founders of the Quintessentially Group, a high end concierge service, which his cousin Ben Elliot co-founded and the same year became Tatler's food columnist.

Joanne Harris (OBE, FRSL) was born in Barnsley in 1964, of a French mother and an English father. Drawing on examples from domestic and international affairs she was personally involved in at the highest level, including Stop and Search and the Salisbury Poisonings, the former prime minister argues for a radical rethink in how we approach our politics and public life.

The Author:
Theresa has served as Member of Parliament for Maidenhead since 1997 and has held several positions within Parliament since. She was a member of the Shadow Cabinet from 1999 to 2010, and from 2002 to 2003 was the first female Chairman of the Conservative Party. In 2010, she was appointed Home Secretary, a position which she held for 6 years before becoming Prime Minister. She served as Prime Minister for three years, until July 2019.

Theresa had a varied education spanning both the state and private sectors, and both grammar school and comprehensive school. She read Geography at St Hugh’s College, Oxford University. She started her career at the Bank of England and went on to hold posts at the Association for Payment Clearing Services (APACS) as Head of the European Affairs Unit and Senior Adviser on International Affairs.

Theresa has been involved in politics at all levels for many years, starting out stuffing envelopes at her local Conservative Association before going on to be a councillor in the London Borough of Merton from 1986 to 1994. During that time she was Chairman of Education between 1988 and 1990 and Deputy Group Leader and Housing Spokesman between 1992 and 1994.

Theresa was elected Member of Parliament for Maidenhead in May 1997. She lives in the constituency and is an active local campaigner. Her local activity has included campaigns to improve the local train service, bring a minor injuries unit to St Marks Hospital, and improve Maidenhead town centre.

She has held several positions within Parliament since 1997. She was a member of the Shadow Cabinet from 1999 to 2010, and from 2002 to 2003 was the first female Chairman of the Conservative Party.

Theresa was appointed Home Secretary in May 2010 and became the longest-serving Conservative Home Secretary for over a century. During this time she oversaw reductions in crime, reform of the police, and the introduction of the landmark Modern Slavery Act.Following her election as Leader of the Conservative Party, Theresa was appointed Prime Minister in July 2016, a position she held until July 2019. As Prime Minister, she oversaw the largest ever cash boost to the NHS and the largest expansion of mental health services in a generation; launched a 25-Year Environment Plan and introduced legislation to end the UK’s contribution to global warming entirely; published a Modern Industrial Strategy to ensure that the jobs of the future are created across the whole country not just in London; and established the first ever Race Disparity Audit to shine a light on injustices. During her time in Downing Street, the UK’s national debt fell, there were more people in work than ever before, and taxes were cut for 32 million people.

Theresa was re-elected as the MP for Maidenhead in December 2019 and continues to speak regularly in the House of Commons on a range of local, national, and international issues.

In 1973, Sophie Neville was cast as Titty alongside Suzanna Hamilton and Dame Virginia McKenna in the EMI/Theatre Projects movie of 'Swallows & Amazons' (1974). Made before the advent of CGI or digital technology, the young actors lived out Arthur Ransome's epic adventure on location in the British Lake District.

As part of their schoolwork, the children were asked to keep diaries about their time spent filming. Meanwhile, the hip young crew from Elstree Studios were getting to grips with transforming 1970's Windermere in mid-holiday season into a 1929 idyll. They never guessed that their happy 'Woodstock-on-wheels' experience would become such an enduring worldwide success. Richard Keith Robert Coles FRSA FKC (born 26 March 1962) is an English writer, radio presenter and Church of England clergyman who was the vicar of Finedon in Northamptonshire from 2011 to 2022. Born in the Kingdom of Fife in 1960, Ian Rankin graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1982, and then spent three years writing novels when he was supposed to be working towards a PhD in Scottish Literature.

After university and before his success with his Rebus novels, Ian had a number of jobs including working as a grape-picker, a swineherd, a journalist for a hi-fi magazine, and a taxman. Following his marriage in 1986, he lived briefly in London where he worked at the National Folktale Centre, followed by a short time living in France, before returning to Edinburgh.

Ian’s first novel Summer Rites remains in his bottom drawer, but his second novel, The Flood, was published in 1986, while his first Rebus novel, Knots & Crosses, was published in 1987. The Rebus series is now translated into twenty-two languages and the books are bestsellers on several continents. In addition to his Rebus and Malcolm Fox novels, he has also written standalone novels including Doors Open, which was televised in 2012, short stories, a graphic novel – Dark Entries – and a play (with Mark Thomson, the Royal Lyceum Theatre’s Artistic Director) Dark Road, which premiered at the Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh, in September 2013. A second play, Long Shadows, starring John Rebus, was co-written with Rona Munro and staged in 2018. The Author:
For two decades Damien Lewis worked as a war and conflict reporter for major broadcasters, reporting from across Africa, South America, the Middle and Far East, during which time he won numerous awards for his journalism.
In 2001 he wrote his first book, Slave, which was an international bestseller translated into some forty languages, and which was made into a film (I Am Slave) and a stage play (Slave). In 2003 he wrote his first book about elite military operations, Operation Certain Death, which was a Sunday Times top ten bestseller, followed by the number one bestseller Zero Six Bravo.

Since then Lewis has penned a dozen related bestsellers, including Operation Relentless, the story of the DEA’s hunt for the world’s most-wanted arms-dealer, Russian billionaire Viktor Bout (presently being made into a TV drama series).

He presently has several other books in various stages of development as TV drama series or movies, including a trilogy of films being scripted by Paramount Pictures.

In addition, his own life story as a war reporter is being developed as a TV drama series by foremost British-based TV and film company. He has scripted some of his own work and is performing the role of Executive Producer on some of his film projects.

This is the revised edition of Will Black's classic book. Estimates of the percentage of psychopaths and sociopaths in society range from 1% to 4%. The proportion of those with psychopathic traits is greater in certain professions, including banking, law and the media. This is not surprising as psychopaths are attracted to environments where they can maximise their influence and rewards. Many people imagine psychopaths to be like serial killers in films. While it is true that some killers are psychopathic, it is also true that many more people in 'respectable' jobs have psychopathic qualities. Indicators include self esteem being derived from personal gain, power and pleasure, lack of concern for feelings, needs and suffering of others and a tendency to exploit, deceive and coerce. They may appear charming but this is superficial and used to manipulate as, ultimately, other people are prey. There has been greater focus in recent years on psychopaths who avoid being imprisoned or diagnosed and who gain positions of power. These are particularly dangerous because - as well as having a detrimental impact on those around them - they are are in a position to shape society and create what I term 'psychopathic cultures'. Pathological cultures can be found in families and small networks, larger institutions, global corporations and governments. Once a pathological culture has been established, it can expand and infect healthy cultures - whether directly led by psychopaths or not. Long after a psychopath who infected an institution has moved on, the culture may remain toxic - which is harmful to those working within in. Because the need to conform is so strong, decent people can end up emulating psychopathic traits if they find themselves within a pathological culture. A range of environments are discussed in this book, using the terms psychopathic, pathological and toxic cultures. The mention of individuals linked to particular organisations does not imply that those people are being defined as psychopathic. It is for clinicians and perhaps history to define individuals as psychopaths, but it is for society to decide if the systems surrounding us are pathological or not.

The Book 2: Veneer of Civilisation
Bringing together politics, psychology, literature and anthropology,
Will Black discusses ways in which the veneer of civilisation can be eroded by events or dramatically torn away, and considers paradoxes such as nations claiming to be civilised even as they drop bombs on other countries’ civilians.
The potential erosion of civilisation in the US and Europe by the far-right, who exploit the violence of groups like Daesh to justify racist narratives, is examined. This includes a focus on Anders Breivik and his attempt to spark a Europe-wide civil war, Jo Cox’s killer Thomas Mair, the banned Nazi group National Action and attempts to rebrand the far-right with the term ‘alt-right’.
Events in Charlottesville and the far-right’s embracing of Donald Trump as their hero are covered. The background, value and pitfalls of globalisation and neoliberalism are discussed in the context of notions of utopia and dystopia, and the recognition that one person’s heaven can be another’s hell.

Sue Hendra grew up in Wimbledon and has always loved making up stories and drawing pictures. Her favourite book as a child was Mr Silly. She graduated from Brighton University in 1994 and has been creating picture books ever since.
