Welcome to our 2026 'Masterpieces' Art Auction, supporting the Blue Sky Bursaries Appeal at Eastbourne College and St Andrew's Prep. From oil paintings to biro sketches, creations from our wonderful pupils and professional artists alike, there is sure to be something here that catches your eye!
The Blue Sky Bursaries Appeal has the ambitious aim of providing the equivalent of up to 40 fully-funded bursary places at any one time at Eastbourne College and St Andrew's Prep. We want to put funding in place to allow as many children as possible to benefit from a transformative Eastbourne education.
These pieces are on display in the Birley Centre at Eastbourne College. The gallery is viewable by appointment - please email es@eastbourne-college.co.uk or call 01323 452316 Monday-Friday 9am-5pm if you wish to arrange a viewing.

After finishing her Fine Art degree at St. Martin's, Sarah left London for the restoration and conservation studios of Rome. here she studied old master oil painting techniques which give her paintings their depth of translucent colour using resins and varnishes. A commission from the Italian jockey club in 1995 to paint their derby winner "Luso", trained by Clive Brittain, brought Sarah back to her British racing roots, where she quickly established her reputation as one of our foremost equestrian artists.

"Based in Sussex, I paint and draw directly from life celebrating the individuality, dynamism, curves and shapes in the moving and motionless human form. I use varied materials such as paint, ink, charcoal and pastel on canvas or paper. Each medium has a particular excitement and the quality of marks and colour palette is of paramount importance.
Dancers, acrobats and performers are often the basis of my work as they move before me, and its a pleasure to share in their creative process. There is never more than a brief moment of stillness as even when the performers are briefly holding their position, the rope or trapeze still maintains energy and life or the dancers move on. I have to grasp what I see, capturing the serendipity of the fleeting tensions as they emerge and disappear. I strive to give the appearance that the figure has only just arrived and could get up and move away at any moment, even in a longer pose."

'Colours of the Downs' by Sue Branch
"I’m Sue and I have been painting for quite few years but it was a bit on and off to start with. In 2018 I completed a diploma in art and then in 2020 lock down came and finished off my business in IT. I was a freelance IT Trainer, and as many people did during those couple of years, I dedicated my time to painting.
I live in East Sussex and paint using oils. I love this medium as it very flexible and contrary to what many people believe, does not take ages to dry! The drying time is largely dependent on the support used and the ground on this support. Very often the surface is dry but the underlying layers take longer. Of course, if impasto is applied it will take much longer to dry.
To my colleagues I am known as the Downland Painter because, who cannot fail to fall in love with this beautiful scenery with all the flora and fauna that go with it, so I make it my mission to paint it when I can. When the weather permits, I go out and paint, finishing off the study in my studio. Otherwise, I take photos of the scenery and adapt my painting.
Someone once told me to never copy a photo just use it as a reference. Very sound advice!
During the year of my diploma course, I learned a lot about the past masters and their styles. To some extent I have been influenced by the Impressionists such as Paul Cezanne, Camille Pissarro and the by the Fauvists such as Matisse and Andre Derain and of course over time develop a style of my own." https://suebranchart.co.uk/

"For over 25 years I’ve worked as a graphic designer both in London and in Hastings, and it was while working in Hastings I found the need to find a creative outlet away from the Apple Mac.
A letterpress course in Brighton hit the spot and my journey into the world of printmaking began. Although I had dabbled with printmaking, both at school and through studying graphic design at college this 10 week course ignited a real connection with the process. Since taking that course, printmaking has become an ever-increasing passion in my life, opening up opportunities to work with others and expand their knowledge and commitment to this process.
I’m inspired by typographic styles from the past, combining old style processes with modern day sayings and language to create small editions and one off prints."

Robert Tavener, illustrator and printmaker, was born in London. After 6 years war service he attended Hornsey College of Art (1946-1950). He was head of Printmaking at Eastbourne College of Art and Design from 1953, later to become vice principal until he retired in 1980. He also taught at St Martins School of Art for one day a week. He did much illustration work as well as commissions for organisations such as Shell, the BBC, and London Transport. He was a senior fellow of the Royal Society of Painter/Printmakers. His work is held in over 25 public collections including the V+A and the Government Art Collection.

Irene Marot is a professional actress turned artist. She completed her MA in Fine Art Painting at the University of Brighton in 2007.

When bidding on an auction item, if you enter more than the minimum increment for an item then your bid will be used for proxy bidding. This is how it works:
1. You enter the absolute maximum that you are willing to bid for an item.
2. jumblebee places a bid on your behalf, using the minimum amount required to make you the highest bidder, i.e. current bid price plus bid increment OR the reserve price, if there is one and it can be covered by your proxy bid.
3. jumblebee continues to bid on your behalf, whenever you are outbid by another
member's bid, until your maximum bid is exceeded or the auction is won.
4. jumblebee will notify you by email if your maximum bid is outbid by another member and provided the auction is still running, you will then have a chance to enter a new
maximum bid if you wish.
For example:
The current bid on an auction item is £100. The minimum increment is £10. You enter a bid of £150 (your maximum bid).
Using your bid, but increasing only by the minimum increment, jumblebee sets the current bid to £110.
Another person bids £130 but they are immediately outbid by jumblebee bidding on your behalf and the current bid goes up to £140.
The auction finishes and you have won the auction item at a price of £140.
