In Tracey's interview she shares her experiences of staying strong with heart issues and a diagnosis of heart failure and after seeing a beautiful photo of her connecting with her majestic horse, Magic, I decided to recreate this pairing in clay.

I am a disabled artist working in Devon, and the main themes in my work are mothering and loss. My artistic practice is rooted in painting, and amplified with three-dimensional manifestations and dioramas of the interplay between imagined figures and feelings. I am fascinated in the perception of preciousness and how it becomes embodied in objects.

‘Ovarian cancer is more common in women over 65 but it can also affect younger people. I based this stained glass portrait on Mev’s beautiful scars of gold photograph. Her hands were placed over her abdomen and I used an ethereal shape to represent the gold.’

About the artist: I create stained glass portraits of women who have shaped our world. They could be educators, artists, activists, suffragettes, civil rights campaigners, poets, writers or even "witches". Maybe they think they are ordinary. But they have one thing in common; they made a mark. I am self-taught, after starting stained glass as a lock-down hobby. My work has developed from stained glass suncatchers and landscapes to work that challenges and raises awareness, often from a feminist perspective. I use the copper foil (or Tiffany) stained glass technique which allows me to include delicate lines and shapes. I draw and design everything myself. This may or may not be related to my dislike of following rules and patterns! I am based near Edinburgh in South East Scotland and I teach beginners stained glass classes with Edinburgh Council's Adult Education Team.

‘Roxy is confident and unafraid which makes her the perfect spokesperson and advocate for equality, disability, gender, race, and ethnicity. Roxy spent many years under a misdiagnosis for her condition. The eye on the top of the skull represents the start of her correct diagnosis for multiple sclerosis.
I loved that Roxy is proud to promote that disability does not need to be unfashionable. She is working with her disability to promote that style can be incorporated with outfits and her walking sticks are made to match.
She spoke of her love of burlesque, alternative style, and music. I took inspiration from her tattoos and outfit she was wearing on the day we met. I was impressed with how she spoke about advocacy and promotion for disabled people being able to have love and relationships.
Her piece represents that you can be bold, different and have the sexual identity you want. Be you want to be and live life to the full!’

‘’Nirusha first contacted me after resonating with one of my paintings that conceptualised the egg as a symbol of our fertility and fragility of our mortality. Having so many synergies in health experiences and spoken at length about the struggles of learning to walk again (and the freedom of independence and autonomy that comes with) along with pregnancy loss and the uncertainty of the future, I felt producing a piece that continued along the very theme that originally connected us was important. Nirusha’s love of water and connecting back to the ocean as a way of grounding was important, whilst including the egg as a symbol of fertility which I know Nirusha resonates with.’

About the artist: Clare Gregory is an artist and sufferer of 2 chronic illnesses, Fibromyalgia and Endometriosis, her current art practice explores being chronically ill, recent series in particular have depicted Endometriosis.
One of these series, 'X Marks the Spot,' made up Gregory's final unit as a 3rd year Fine Art student and explored her body after having a second Laparoscopic surgery for Endometriosis.
"I was also emotionally recovering as I started to have symptoms related to my bowel and being in that much discomfort and pain a few months after recovering from surgery can be really demoralising. I am still under investigation for these issues."
Now as a Fine Art graduate, Clare Gregory is keen to continue her exploration of how art can benefit health and wellbeing. She is currently searching and applying for jobs within the NHS and hopes in the future to combine the two so her art can benefit those seeking treatment through the NHS.

‘Jo’s vivacious energy and lively personality, accentuated by her expressive hands reminded me of a butterfly in motion.
As we sat chatting over lunch, the contrast between her bright lively presence and the deeper struggles she had faced were evident. Diagnosed with an eating disorder in her early teens, she endured clumsy medical support, leading to ongoing challenges with anxiety and food. Later, difficulties during pregnancy and birth became a turning point to channel her experiences into something positive—she created ‘BabyLed Kitchen’, a venture that helps families make easy, nutritious meals that children can also both help prepare and enjoy.
I was deeply impressed by her transformative approach, not only in navigating her own journey but in supporting others. This inspired the idea of a group portrait—depicting Jo in multiple stages of animation, reflecting the different aspects of herself as she cajoles, challenges, and encourages her own relationship with food.The concept reminded me of Family Systems Therapy, which explores our many internal parts. To reinforce these themes, I also employed pastel colours, a lively slightly abstracted graphic approach to evoke my impression of her and of children’s art found in nurseries and classrooms.’

About the artist; At the heart of my art practice is a preoccupation with what happens when interactions occur and cause adaptive or transformative change. This is further informed by my background which includes working as an actress, therapist and tutor. I create varied series', employing both representational and abstract approaches which investigate aspects of this phenomenological enquiry.
When painting portraits or figures the aim is to always emphasise a psychological or narrative thread, which also offer layers of personal meaning whilst allowing for individual interpretation. Within my abstract works these interconnections are evident in micro and macro processes present throughout the natural world which undergo change, or shifts in perspective.
In 2020 Deborah participated in PAOTY on Sky TV and within online and Gallery exhibitions. With interviews, articles and artwork featured in magazines including; Seisma, Art Etcetera, Phi-Art,The Edge, and WOI Deborah continues to develop projects and collaborate in arenas related to the arts, psychology, philosophy and sciences.

About the artist: Art has always been my passion, and it’s been a constant thread in my life. Born in Aberdeen, I studied at the School of Art and graduated with a degree in Design & Surface Decoration. My professional career as an in-house designer spanned almost two decades, allowing me to work in various creative industries. But when I was diagnosed with cancer, everything changed. I stepped away from the industry to focus on my treatment, and during that time, painting became my sanctuary, my healing space.
It was during this period of reflection and recovery that the Natural Quirks Collection was born. This collection is inspired by my deep love for the natural world. I’ve always been drawn to the flora and fauna around us, their vibrant colours and intricate forms, and how they reflect the resilience of nature itself. My illustrations are hand-painted in watercolours, carefully woven together with elements from the natural world, and infused with colour that brings a sense of playfulness and whimsy to each piece.
I like to think of my work as modern — it combines the format of design with the timeless essence of natural history archives. About the artist: Clare Gregory is an artist and sufferer of 2 chronic illnesses, Fibromyalgia and Endometriosis, her current art practice explores being chronically ill, recent series in particular have depicted Endometriosis.
One of these series, 'X Marks the Spot,' made up Gregory's final unit as a 3rd year Fine Art student and explored her body after having a second Laparoscopic surgery for Endometriosis.
"I was also emotionally recovering as I started to have symptoms related to my bowel and being in that much discomfort and pain a few months after recovering from surgery can be really demoralising. I am still under investigation for these issues."
Now as a Fine Art graduate, Clare Gregory is keen to continue her exploration of how art can benefit health and wellbeing. She is currently searching and applying for jobs within the NHS and hopes in the future to combine the two so her art can benefit those seeking treatment through the NHS.

‘Amie is as her instagram name suggests “Bionic”. I was moved by her story. Her challenges through misdiagnosis for many years to finally getting some clarity around her condition after an unfortunate car accident. This resulted in her getting her internal defibrillator which truly makes her bionic!
Amie is a tattoo artist. She can see the beauty in death and appreciates the forms of skulls and bones.
She loves animals, houseplants, Japan, is an anime fan, and her favourite film is Alien hence the golden face hugger taking president on the back of the skull.
I have taken into account Amie’s love of anatomical hearts which I have added in the skull with an anime twist to represent her condition.
I wanted to take all of these elements and incorporate them into a piece that describes Amie…….'

‘Inspired by the painting by number kits that Emily paints as gifts for her loved ones, it also represents her pragmatic down to earth and un-materialistic approach to life.
Things are simplified with an image of vegetables from the allotment on a table with the valued daily essentials such as sitting with a cup of tea and toast and looking out on to a morning sunrise.
On closer inspection the colour key does not match with the painting and it has no numbers, this symbolises that everything is not always as we expect it to be in life and occasionally things can spill out of the box.
However the bright psychedelic sky and colours reflect a positve and fun approach to just getting on with each day and appreciating it for what it is and showing gratitude for the more simpler things in life.’

About the artist: Originally from North West London, Sue is a former Art Technician and College Lecturer. Previously specialising in ceramics for further education and assisted learning disabilities in Middlesex, Hertfordshire and Essex.
Since moving to Norfolk she is now a semi retired Reiki Master and creates mixed media art influenced by her travels, interest in eastern cultures, spiritualism and her passion for horticulture.
“I have always had a variety of different interests and pursuits, however over the last few years l have found my creative and spiritual practices have started overlapping. Working as a Reiki practitioner for the charity MIND and promoting positive mental health for myself and others, has led me to hosting mindfulness drawing workshops and using spiritual symbolism such as mandalas and lotus flowers in my artwork. There are slight imperfections but this makes them unique and each one reflects my own individuality. My intention is not to create precise images but to follow the making process and journey to see where it takes me. I enjoy working with various mixed media and exploring the variety of surface textures, patterns and forms l create as l learn new techniques and let my designs evolve and develop.”

Having studied Fine Art in college, and later making the decision not to accept an art school offer to dedicate myself to working full time as a pencil portrait artist, it wasn’t until lockdown in 2020 when I picked up the oil paints and fell in love.
Discovering this new medium reignited my passion of art and painting, and has in turn resulted in multiple exhibitions and Shortlist placings with acclaimed galleries.
Painting was put on the back burner while my photography career was taking off, so being able to pick up the brushes again (especially for a project I’m so passionate about) has been so special and I’m honoured to have the opportunity to paint my voices!

‘Viv described the sensation she had of ‘the clock ticking down’ and her need to find hope. A few days later I read an interview with the aid worker Simon Boas, who wrote A Beginner’s Guide to Dying after being diagnosed with terminal throat cancer. To quote Simon, he described himself as being at ‘the don’t buy any green bananas’ stage of his illness.
While no one can promise Viv time, I wanted to give her a touchstone, something to remind her that she can still enjoy her life and live every day to its fullest, just as she has always done. So, I have made her a bunch of green bananas in ceramic. They sit in a gold burdock leaf – a plant rich in anti-oxidants with detoxing qualities, deemed to have ancient magical qualities of removing negative energies, while offering courage and protection.’

About the artist: With a background in psychology I am fascinated by the way in which people’s beliefs impact their behaviour, their interpretation of events and construction of their personal history. This interest in personal narrative – the story of a life and the way a person recalls their experience and talks about it – is a key influence on my art work. 'After listening to Victoria's story, I was struck by her resilience and resolution to seek joy. It made me think about the intentional dissipation of the negative- and this made me think of sacred burning.
After speaking to Victoria, I discovered that writing down things that we want to be rid is something that she does regularly in workshops- Victoria calls this 'The Unspoken'.
'The Unspoken' [artwork] has been created with the intention of being used as a ritual object. It uses the ancient technique coiling to suggest a figure, focused on the abdomen. Sweetgrass, which symbolises the divine feminine, hangs in the vessel, ready to be burned along with thoughts, feelings and actions she no longer needs.’

I spent 10 years as a freelance artist educator working with communities to develop my social engagement practice. I worked with groups of all ages in schools, galleries, museums and cultural centres in London and abroad. I now live in Sheffield, where I work as a full time mother, part time in a school, make pottery and I’m beginning my journey back to art. I am interested in the role of inter-generational trauma through mother-lines and use themes of trace, memory and collection to explore this.

'I wanted to reflect on Gizela's Polish heritage and the positive memories and activities she shares with her friends and family. Inspired by the popular Polish folk craft of papercut outs called Wycinanki ( vee-chi-non -kee) and the red Korale beads that hold folkloric attributes and fond memories of her childhood.
Some Wycinanki cutouts look very similar to mandalas which can be used to symbolise an individual's journey.
There's an unusual beauty in microscopic views of cells, that look a little bit like marbling. Haematoxylin stains nuclei cells blue, while eosin stains cytoplasm and other extracellular substances pink or red. So I marbeled some of the papers for my wycinanki materials. They are bright colours that Gizela is drawn to and l feel that l have managed to bring all these elements together in creating a mandala of her living her life.'

‘Interviewing Claire, I was moved by her determination to embrace life and not allow herself to be consumed by the cancer diagnosis. Her vibrant and gentle but optimistic approach to life was continuing to stay strong despite the multiple traumas and challenges being inflicted upon her by the cancer. Claire did not stop smiling her beaming smile throughout the interview and day filming, but when it came to the photography and acknowledging her scars she stood strong, (dropping the smile) and shared a vulnerability and truth that was striking. I was really moved by how she approached her secondary diagnosis and wanted to capture that moment of poignant reflection and pause as she shared her scar of gold with us.’

About the artist: Liz is a multi-award winning artist having spent over 10 years producing art inspired by women’s health topics and using art to address health inequalities. In 2020 Liz was a finalist in the Visual Art Open for her sculpture inspired by working on the front-line during the Covid-19 pandemic, and then went on to produce a series of part-surrealism and part conceptualised art using an egg as a symbol of fertility and mortality. Liz derived the concept of Scars of Gold after facing her own mortality and continues to play with a range of styles and mediums depending on the muse.

‘The lovely Natalie just screams colour. From her pink hair, to her optimistic, joyful personality - I knew this painting needed to express that aspect of her! The pastel mint green compliments her pastel pink hair (and is her favourite colour!) The gold leaf was specifically applied to accentuate the incredibly neat scar that Natalie was left with after her surgery - highlighted in both her Scars of Gold photography and this painting.’

‘In my art work, Tracy is playing a game of chess against an invisible (and unpredictable) enemy, the cancer. The only pieces we can see on the board are Tracy and her support system. Each of the main pieces symbolise something or someone that Tracy has found supportive. The swear words/phrases on the pawns are reflections of her verbal reaction to the news of each stage in her cancer. The piece is intended to reflect her energy and personality, showing her strength and the support she has built around her.’

‘One of three pieces in a similar theme as I interviewed three of the Voices in succession and all struck me with a similar energy and reflection. Lisa was in that transitional period of re-discovering and reclaiming her identity and love for life ‘on the other side’ of her cancer treatment. There was a continuous flurry of both vulnerability and trauma contrasting with enthusiasm and excitement to embrace life. This was something I chose to capture in a more abstract contemporary approach full of colour and energy in contrast to the still reserved pose.’

In 2020 Liz was a finalist in the Visual Art Open for her sculpture inspired by working on the front-line during the Covid-19 pandemic, and then went on to produce a series of part-surrealism and part conceptualised art using an egg as a symbol of fertility and mortality. About the artist: With a background in psychology I am fascinated by the way in which people’s beliefs impact their behaviour, their interpretation of events and construction of their personal history. This interest in personal narrative – the story of a life and the way a person recalls their experience and talks about it – is a key influence on my art work. I am also an author and I often use text in my art.

I love experimenting with different approaches and learning new techniques so I rarely make the same thing twice. I primarily work in clay/mixed media, making experimental ceramics, sculptures and artpieces. About the artist: The foundation for my work begins with intersectional feminism and biographical experiences, incorporating aspects of both my research and practice. The women I represent are active, with a voice and given physical space for their narratives. I'm exploring the female experience through visual and audio representation, integrating elements of subjects' identities using patterns, tattoos and jewellery. I integrate biographical experience with social criticism, using feminist theory to underpin and critically evaluate. For me, re-examining and giving a platform to the female experience from women's perspectives is still radical. Process and materiality are significant to me working with egg tempera, and oil. I allow the viewer to see the journey of the painting and the movement of the line’s underneath, leaving some areas 'unfinished' while others are more laboured: creating a space for imagining new feminist possibilities to continue.

About the artist: Recently graduated from Fine Art (Hons) at Newcastle University, Liv Collins (she/they) is an emerging artist, writer and designer based in the Northeast of England. Her artistic practice revolves around themes of celebration, giving, feminism and queer identity. Her surgeon eventually agreed to perform her second, symmetrising and empowering, mastectomy eighteen months after the first.’

‘Finding joy in adversity is one of the traits that I admire about Juliet. During her breast cancer treatment she had to forgo a much longed for trip to Chelsea Flower Show. Instead, her husband asked friends, family, colleagues (in fact anyone) for help. So, on the day of the show, she woke to gifts of seeds, flowers, pots and tools so that she could begin her own flower show once she was strong enough. Gardening became part of her recovery and eased some of the anxiety that she experienced during her diagnosis and treatment. Fast forward several years and that loving gesture has led to a not just a back garden full of flowers but a strong belief and understanding of the therapeutic benefits of growing sustainable, organic, British flowers.’

About the artist: Based in south Devon, Amie Leonhardt is an artist with a colourful background. Having grown up in Glastonbury and now living on Dartmoor, nature is a huge inspiration in her art and everyday life.
After suffering from two near fatal cardiac events and countless fainting spells since her teenage years, she was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy and Mitral Valve regurgitation. She’s still in the process of having tests and is waiting on a 3rd diagnosis believed to be either- Arrhythmic bi-leaflet mitral valve prolapse or CPVT - both rare and deadly cardiac conditions. She now has her own S-ICD to keep her safe and will be on medication for the rest of her life.
Art has always been her way to manage and cope with the vast range of emotions that come with living life with SADS conditions, especially living with them undiagnosed for so long. Moving forward, she hopes to raise funds and awareness of these serious heart conditions with her art.

'Clare's Story,' is an artwork by the artist Clare Ellen Gregory inspired by her own journey with Fibromyalgia and Endometriosis. The gold leaf is used to highlight this, placed where Gregory has scars from laparoscopic surgeries, stretch marks from hormonal treatments and where she experiences pain with her Fibromyalgia.

About the artist: Clare Gregory is an artist and sufferer of 2 chronic illnesses, Fibromyalgia and Endometriosis, her current art practice explores being chronically ill, recent series in particular have depicted Endometriosis.
One of these series, 'X Marks the Spot,' made up Gregory's final unit as a 3rd year Fine Art student and explored her body after having a second Laparoscopic surgery for Endometriosis.
"I was also emotionally recovering as I started to have symptoms related to my bowel and being in that much discomfort and pain a few months after recovering from surgery can be really demoralising. I am still under investigation for these issues."
Now as a Fine Art graduate, Clare Gregory is keen to continue her exploration of how art can benefit health and wellbeing. She is currently searching and applying for jobs within the NHS and hopes in the future to combine the two so her art can benefit those seeking treatment through the NHS.

‘This piece represents Post Natal Depression and the struggle Lorna went through to overcome it. Despite the lack of feeling she experienced, represented by the top layer of very light blue, threre was a lot going on beneath the surface, represented by the dark layer, which she had to battle through. The strip of blue shapes that move from dark to light represent her navigating her way through it all and, with support, coming out the other side. The title ‘To Feel Is The Most Amazing Thing' are the words she used at the end of her podcast.’

About the artist: Carol Burns is an award-winning Scottish-born artist based in Wiltshire, England, known for her emotionally resonant and unconventional abstract paintings. 'Mags’ beautiful poem depicts her looking in the mirror and almost not recognising herself. That sense of looking at the world you’re not currently a part of is so common during treatment, and the isolation of illness. In the painting I wanted to depict the things she loves, with her looking out the window of the hospital at the life she’ll reclaim.’

About the artist: I have loved painting and drawing since I was little girl . I attended art school as a young woman but unfortunately my home life changed and I had give up and get a job. Art was put on the back burner for many years with a career and family to cope with, until I became ill in my 40’s.
My physical strength, mental health and confidence plummeted.
I needed to get back to the things I could do and not concentrate on the things I couldn’t. I found my way back to my love for painting particularly conceptual work. Since I’ve had both solo exhibitions and mixed. I’ve been lucky enough to have exhibited in many lovely galleries and met some amazing people.
In my work I like to tell a story and that’s why I’ve loved working with the wonderful women from mortal and strong.
Telling their stories has been an enormous privilege and I’m honoured to be part of something so worthy.

'Roisin’s passion for her family, friends and colour inspired me. She is positive and courageous and has not let go of her dreams. I wanted to ensure these things are represented in her piece.
The hand is the symbol for Roisins Fighty Pants brand. The badges are her designs. The chain represents armour and strength and the hand itself holds her daughter Ivy who is her strength. I have included colour on her wedding finger and added a heart for her husband. Her new son is peeking as baby between thumb and forefinger.’

‘I present a box of my mental emotions following my Trigeminal Neuralgia journey.

Sensitive like bruised fruit are
four metaphors of my affliction.
The daily pain of electric shocks
l live with and feeling broken.
The brain fogged, sedated side effects of medication, a meditative, self healing state of finding effective alternatives such as acupuncture and a gold resurrection bird arirsing empowered from the ashes with the pain currently in remission. For how long who knows? it's a game of chance but each pain free day is greatly revered.

Fire is a theme throughout this piece of work, from the burning sensation of one of my flare attacks, ceramic smoked fired faces, displayed against charcoal in a charred wooden box using the technique of Shou sugi ban and the gold connection to my firebird within. Each day l learn to find the balance within the fire and use the phoenix to tame the dragon.’

About the artist: Originally from North West London, Sue is a former Art Technician and College Lecturer. Previously specialising in ceramics for further education and assisted learning disabilities in Middlesex, Hertfordshire and Essex.
Since moving to Norfolk she is now a semi retired Reiki Master and creates mixed media art influenced by her travels, interest in eastern cultures, spiritualism and her passion for horticulture.
“I have always had a variety of different interests and pursuits, however over the last few years l have found my creative and spiritual practices have started overlapping. Working as a Reiki practitioner for the charity MIND and promoting positive mental health for myself and others, has led me to hosting mindfulness drawing workshops and using spiritual symbolism such as mandalas and lotus flowers in my artwork. There are slight imperfections but this makes them unique and each one reflects my own individuality. My intention is not to create precise images but to follow the making process and journey to see where it takes me. I enjoy working with various mixed media and exploring the variety of surface textures, patterns and forms l create as l learn new techniques and let my designs evolve and develop.”

‘On two days of filming I interviewed three women who all shared a similar presence about them which really struck me. All three women had a similar energy of re-emerging colours and positivity following their traumatic cancer experience. With a cautious and slightly reserved approach they shared their vulnerability alongside their hope and deterination to live life and embrace it. It was like seeing emerging colours daring to break through from the shadows. I chose to paint all three women in a similar style; keep loose and free but full of vibrant colour but choosing their reserved and almost shy positions as a stark comparison. Their underlying warmth and modest love of life really struck me.’

Having studied Fine Art in college, and later making the decision not to accept an art school offer to dedicate myself to working full time as a pencil portrait artist, it wasn’t until lockdown in 2020 when I picked up the oil paints and fell in love.

About the artist: The foundation for my work begins with intersectional feminism and biographical experiences, incorporating aspects of both my research and practice. The women I represent are active, with a voice and given physical space for their narratives. I'm exploring the female experience through visual and audio representation, integrating elements of subjects' identities using patterns, tattoos and jewellery. I integrate biographical experience with social criticism, using feminist theory to underpin and critically evaluate. For me, re-examining and giving a platform to the female experience from women's perspectives is still radical. Process and materiality are significant to me working with egg tempera, and oil. I allow the viewer to see the journey of the painting and the movement of the line’s underneath, leaving some areas 'unfinished' while others are more laboured: creating a space for imagining new feminist possibilities to continue.

About the artist: Jen is a fibre artist and metal smith inspired by the absurd, fantastic and undesirable aspects of everyday life. Her aim is to start conversations to nudge the world to be kinder, more sustainable and filled with joy. Each of her works has a tale to tell, a question to ask or a pleasure to share. Some celebrate aspects of life that have brought her happiness; others are darker and demand change.
Jen comes from a long line of makers, she learnt knit and stitch from her mother and metalworking from her father. She studied Mechanical Engineering at University, then in later life studied textiles, basketry, metal smithing and machine knitting at College.

‘Sophie’s story resonated with me as she first became ill when she was very young when she should have been living a carefree life with her friends.
She’s had to endure years of worry and ill health following her original diagnosis of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in her early 20s and two years later, an additional diagnosis of thyroid cancer.
I wanted to acknowledge her darker days as she navigates a difficult life with multiple health conditions, while offering a ray of hope by looking towards the more stable, brighter future she deserves.’

‘Having listened to Lisa's podcast, I was deeply moved by her description of how her husband supported her following her brother's suicide and during her MRI. She describes how her symptoms of fatigue and debilitating pains in her muscles became so much worse with stress and she was unable to move without extreme effort.

‘I met Sarah in hospital about seven years ago. She was being diagnosed with a rare lung disease, while I was waiting for a lung transplant for the same condition. She was the first person I’d met with that illness, and we quickly became close friends.
Rather than focusing on the unfairness of her illness, Sarah is keen to spread the message about the dangers of living with damp, to help others avoid similar health problems. That’s why I thought she’d make a fantastic Voice for this campaign.
Even though she’s on oxygen and uses a ventilator at night, Sarah continues to defy expectations by walking 10,000 steps nearly every day with her beloved sausage dogs. This painting captures a moment of rest and reflection during one of her favourite walks.’

‘Ceramic casts of breast protheses in different skin tones displayed on two laser cut stands typically used for displays at craft fairs. Statistics provided by Breast Cancer Now in 2022 suggest that an estimated 14, 850 women have a mastectomy each year. Of those 21% have immediate reconstruction and 10% have delayed reconstruction. That leaves 10,246 women (69%) who don’t have the surgery to reconstruct a breast - some can’t for various reasons and others elect not to. These women will be offered a prothesis. I am one of those women who could not have a reconstruction, ultimately opting for a second elective mastectomy.’

About the artist: With a background in psychology I am fascinated by the way in which people’s beliefs impact their behaviour, their interpretation of events and construction of their personal history. This interest in personal narrative – the story of a life and the way a person recalls their experience and talks about it – is a key influence on my art work. I am also an author and I often use text in my art.

I love experimenting with different approaches and learning new techniques so I rarely make the same thing twice. About the artist: Elizabeth Lyons is an artist whose work delves into the intersections of personal experience, the human condition, and the fragility of life. Holding an MA in Fine Art from Manchester School of Art, MMU, her creative practice is deeply influenced by working in healthcare for over 20 years. Themes of healing, vulnerability, and impermanence are woven throughout her work—echoing the complex, multifaceted nature of her professional and artistic life.

‘Ellie struck me as a deeply feminine, intellectually curious, and beautiful young woman, who experienced the impact of health traumas within her family from a young age. With both her mother and aunt carrying the BRCA gene, she witnessed the impact of surgery, loss, and difficult medical choices, later discovering she too carried the gene. Confronting this reality at a young age, she made life-changing decisions which continue to shape her path.

Now a Lawyer, and trustee for a BRCA charity, she has also designed feminine undergarments to help women feel more at home in their bodies. As we spoke, she reflected on how her journey had shaped her sense of self and relationships. Now in her thirties, she feels less fractured, more resilient, and purposeful. Her quiet strength left a lasting impression, echoed in the spiral topiary of a nearby tree—symbolising transformation and growth. I wove branches into the composition, gently erasing past fractures. In this portrait, she stands tall, vibrant, and strong as the world moves around her.’

About the artist: At the heart of my art practice is a preoccupation with what happens when interactions occur and cause adaptive or transformative change. This is further informed by my background which includes working as an actress, therapist and tutor. I create varied series', employing both representational and abstract approaches which investigate aspects of this phenomenological enquiry.
When painting portraits or figures the aim is to always emphasise a psychological or narrative thread, which also offer layers of personal meaning whilst allowing for individual interpretation. Within my abstract works these interconnections are evident in micro and macro processes present throughout the natural world which undergo change, or shifts in perspective.
In 2020 Deborah participated in PAOTY on Sky TV and within online and Gallery exhibitions. With interviews, articles and artwork featured in magazines including; Seisma, Art Etcetera, Phi-Art,The Edge, and WOI Deborah continues to develop projects and collaborate in arenas related to the arts, psychology, philosophy and sciences.

‘I hadn’t realised how common breast cancer was amongst women of my age. The diagnosis struck abject fear into me, possibly more than it should’ve due to my ignorance. I painted this not long after my surgery, by bringing my body into the light I hoped to banish some of the darkness around this subject, I hope to project a woman (not a patient) who like so many lives well, post breast cancer.’

‘Laura’s piece is one of three following a similar theme after interviewing three women consecutively who coincidentally all had a similar energy and aura. I had been speaking to Laura on social media before filming and was pleasantly surprised when she arrived for filming without her tracheostomy tube in situ. Laura truly appeared to be blossoming with colour and a child-like excited energy to be free of the clinical breathing tube from her neck. I wanted to capture that transition from raw vulnerability to colourful personality in this peace which I felt humbled to witness through this experience.’

‘From the first occurance of cancer in her body, presenting as double vision in her eye, through to the discovery of a wrinkle on her breast, this piece focuses on how Pam navigated her way through her diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Although the double vision and the wrinkle are both represented, I wanted the main design element, the ‘stairs’ moving through the dark green at the bottom into the light yellow at the top, to represent what she has been through and her hopes for the future. Looking for, and holding onto, hope was something Pam really focused on and it was that which helped her navigate what she was going through. The title ‘Hope For A Good Life’ was taken from the words she used during her podcast.’

About the artist: Chloe (b. 1996) is an award-winning London-based artist creating figurative monotypes about identity, the psyche, and the experience of women, including her own. Her work uses distorted forms, blurred or masked faces, and human-animal hybrids to invite the viewer to imagine themselves as the subject of the scene and find resonance in both the familiar and the reimagined.
Each piece begins with a feeling, which she follows freely, embracing the speed constraints and unpredictability of the monoprinting process to ‘paint with print’ and push against conventional ideas of perfection. Intuitive mark-making, expressive movements, and ‘mistakes’ are all integral to Chloe’s approach: ink can smear, lines can bleed, and the mirrored image can look entirely different from the painted plate. By exploring her own experience through artistic introspection, she also aims to empower other women to see themselves in new ways, outside of the personal, familial, and societal expectations to conform to traditional gender roles, authority, and power dynamics.
Chloe's work has been exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, and the Royal Society of British Artists Bicentennial Exhibition, where she won the Hahnemühle Fine Art Award. In 2023, she was selected as a finalist for the ACS Studio Prize and The Margate Art Prize, judged by Tracey Emin. Chloe holds an MA (Distinction) in Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking from the University of the West of England.

'When Gizela was diagnosed, she was left feeling like 'a product'.
The way she was treated, resonated with me when l heard her story that l felt drawn to painting an antiquated catalogue which developed into illustrations of various breast tumours and an apothecary cabinet contaning her diagnosis.
Even though she has been given this label, she is the lotus plant breaking through the dark muddy affliction of cancer to face another day. The lotus is a powerful symbol of
resilience and transformation, reminding us of our potential to rise above life's difficulties and bloom in the face of adversity. Each morning it emerges from the dark muddy waters it grows in, to face another day. It has long been used in traditional Oriental medicine and known for its many health benefits such as fighting inflammation and preventing cancers.'

About the artist: Originally from North West London, Sue is a former Art Technician and College Lecturer. Previously specialising in ceramics for further education and assisted learning disabilities in Middlesex, Hertfordshire and Essex.
Since moving to Norfolk she is now a semi retired Reiki Master and creates mixed media art influenced by her travels, interest in eastern cultures, spiritualism and her passion for horticulture.
“I have always had a variety of different interests and pursuits, however over the last few years l have found my creative and spiritual practices have started overlapping. Working as a Reiki practitioner for the charity MIND and promoting positive mental health for myself and others, has led me to hosting mindfulness drawing workshops and using spiritual symbolism such as mandalas and lotus flowers in my artwork. There are slight imperfections but this makes them unique and each one reflects my own individuality. My intention is not to create precise images but to follow the making process and journey to see where it takes me. I enjoy working with various mixed media and exploring the variety of surface textures, patterns and forms l create as l learn new techniques and let my designs evolve and develop.”

About the artist: I have loved painting and drawing since I was little girl . I attended art school as a young woman but unfortunately my home life changed and I had give up and get a job. Art was put on the back burner for many years with a career and family to cope with, until I became ill in my 40’s.
My physical strength, mental health and confidence plummeted.
I needed to get back to the things I could do and not concentrate on the things I couldn’t. I found my way back to my love for painting particularly conceptual work. Since I’ve had both solo exhibitions and mixed. I’ve been lucky enough to have exhibited in many lovely galleries and met some amazing people.
In my work I like to tell a story and that’s why I’ve loved working with the wonderful women from mortal and strong.
Telling their stories has been an enormous privilege and I’m honoured to be part of something so worthy.

‘I created this piece of art following 'waking up' during my operation to remove a large ovarian mass with debulking surgery. I couldn't find the words to use to explain how I felt. So, this is me! I'm in immense pain, terrified and feeling helpless. I thought I was screaming and calling out for help, but no one came. I realised my cries couldn't be heard. It was torture. I felt alone, scared and wondered was anyone there that could help me?
The background is to show the pain and suffering I felt in the lead up to my surgery. It shows endometriosis, the blood, the entanglement around my organs and the pain. The words are a chaotic jumble to reflect the various diagnosis I received such as ovarian cancer and endometriosis and the most terrifying of all 'Anesthetic Awareness '; waking up during surgery. To most people this is their nightmare, but for me it was my reality.’

About the artist: Imagination, creativity and curiosity have always played a big part in my life. From writing fantasy stories as a child, baking colourful vegan cupcakes in the kitchen and through many tears working in play with children, inspiring them to get messy, be bald and have fun. I love colour and enjoy how they can help you feel a range of emotions from calming blues and greens of nature to bright yellow and orange of the sun bringing joy and happiness. This is reflected in the colourful clothes I wear and using herbs and spices in the kitchen to liven or calm my soul. I love surrounding myself with crystals of all the colours of the rainbow.
It wasn't until my cancer diagnosis and surgeries in 2023 that I used art to help me process my feelings. I didn't want to talk. What I felt was inside my body, not my head. My natural instinct was to get creative to express myself and all of a sudden, I had unlocked a wonderful way to help me process challenging things. I went on a trauma art therapy and visual journalling for cancer course, both of which helped me greatly. I feel honored to be part of Mortal and Strong to join other women to share our hopes and stories to help others.

'This self portrait takes a recent photograph in profile and shows two ECG lines, both taken when asymptomatic one before and one after treatment. The size meant that the piece was handled as it was sewn and embossed, allowing the oils of the artist’s hands to sink into the materials and change the mailability.’

'l had the pleasure of being asked to be an artist for the mortal and strong campaign and was lucky enough to be paired with the beautiful Anjlee to base my first piece on. we met and she shared her story with me, her love for her children, for nature and for the water.
I really wanted to capture a peaceful and tranquil place as the setting for this piece, not only to reflect Anjlees love for nature and sunrise’s but to also depict the kind of setting Anjlee would feel at peace in, a place where stresses were not present, where cancer did not live… somewhere dreams were made of.
Anjlee was suffering from breast cancer and sadly lost her life... and I was honoured to have met her, she was truly beautiful inside and out.
It brakes me that she was unable to see this piece before it was complete, I hope I really captured her amazing soul - rest peacefully Anjlee.’

'I wanted to capture Emma’s strength and beauty in a way that still acknowledged the struggle she has faced with grade 4 glioblastoma . She mentioned to me her love of the color blue / green and how she’s found a sense of accomplishment through swimming. I thought the water would be a beautiful way to incorporate her favorite color into the piece while also symbolizing a line from one of her favorite songs “Shallow”. Her journey has certainly taken her into the deep waters . Thankfully she has the pool swan the cling to as a means to stay afloat.’

About the artist: I create stained glass portraits of women who have shaped our world. They could be educators, artists, activists, suffragettes, civil rights campaigners, poets, writers or even "witches". Maybe they think they are ordinary. But they have one thing in common; they made a mark. I am self-taught, after starting stained glass as a lock-down hobby. My work has developed from stained glass suncatchers and landscapes to work that challenges and raises awareness, often from a feminist perspective. ‘I created this piece hoping to capture the feeling of isolation and loneliness Sammy felt growing up and having to be removed from a traditional school setting as a result of her illness . The feeling of watching her peers live their lives while she was at home and that kind of separation. The mask is significant in this image as it symbolizes the facade she hid behind while dealing with mental health. Other meaningful symbols are the radio and cat in the image as both music and her pets helped provide comfort during that time.’

'Helen’s natural grace and candour struck me the moment we met. Outside, we shared a deep and wide-ranging conversation, during which she spoke openly about her breast cancer journey and the challenges she’d faced with various attempts at reconstruction.
I wondered whether, in part, her body resisted what was unnatural to her, as she seems entirely at home in nature. Within her profession as a gardener, she finds both joy and solace in the earth—cultivating, designing, and nurturing life. Her strong hands, adorned with an array of rings, appealed to me, and I knew I wanted to include them in my portrayal, symbolising her connection to nature and the self-healing that happens both from the outside in and the inside out.
As she spoke of her struggles as a mother and wife during this time, her quiet determination to survive and flourish shone through. This resilience was mirrored as she lifted her face to the early spring sun, like a heliotropic flower drawn to the light.
The stunning grounds of Little Massingham Manor in Norfolk became the perfect setting. The circular wooden structures echoed the small circular tattoo as an emblem of completion, acceptance, and transformation, a mark of her journey in mind, body, and spirit.'
Deborah Pearse

About the artist; At the heart of my art practice is a preoccupation with what happens when interactions occur and cause adaptive or transformative change. This is further informed by my background which includes working as an actress, therapist and tutor. I create varied series', employing both representational and abstract approaches which investigate aspects of this phenomenological enquiry.
When painting portraits or figures the aim is to always emphasise a psychological or narrative thread, which also offer layers of personal meaning whilst allowing for individual interpretation. Within my abstract works these interconnections are evident in micro and macro processes present throughout the natural world which undergo change, or shifts in perspective.
In 2020 Deborah participated in PAOTY on Sky TV and within online and Gallery exhibitions. ‘I was inspired by how a woman looks does not mean they do not feel pain or are suffering inside.
I loved the story of the journey of Tanya and that through raising awareness, girls in schools are being properly educated on all things menstruation and are provided with a variety of product choices on managing this.
I liked the way the pain of Adeno and Endo was described visually so that it is easy to identify.
I have combined some of the pain symbols over a body made of silver jewellery pieces which represents strength and beauty, but lest we not forget how we might feel inside.’

About the artist: Chloe (b. 1996) is an award-winning London-based artist creating figurative monotypes about identity, the psyche, and the experience of women, including her own. Her work uses distorted forms, blurred or masked faces, and human-animal hybrids to invite the viewer to imagine themselves as the subject of the scene and find resonance in both the familiar and the reimagined.
Each piece begins with a feeling, which she follows freely, embracing the speed constraints and unpredictability of the monoprinting process to ‘paint with print’ and push against conventional ideas of perfection. Intuitive mark-making, expressive movements, and ‘mistakes’ are all integral to Chloe’s approach: ink can smear, lines can bleed, and the mirrored image can look entirely different from the painted plate. By exploring her own experience through artistic introspection, she also aims to empower other women to see themselves in new ways, outside of the personal, familial, and societal expectations to conform to traditional gender roles, authority, and power dynamics.
Chloe's work has been exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, and the Royal Society of British Artists Bicentennial Exhibition, where she won the Hahnemühle Fine Art Award. In 2023, she was selected as a finalist for the ACS Studio Prize and The Margate Art Prize, judged by Tracey Emin. Chloe holds an MA (Distinction) in Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking from the University of the West of England.

This handcrafted sculpture draws its essence from the remarkable journey of Beverly McCann - her battle with breast cancer, her unwavering spirit, and her ability to find beauty even in adversity. Beverly’s resilience is not just a testament to survival but a celebration of life itself.
Her scars, etched by struggle yet shimmering with victory, are traced in gold - elevated, honored, and made luminous. They are not marks of loss but of courage, an intricate map of a warrior’s path. The interplay of three distinct glazes creates the illusion of iron - unyielding, steadfast—while the delicate nature of clay speaks to the vulnerability that exists within strength. This contrast is a powerful metaphor: to be strong does not mean to be unbreakable, but rather to rise, to heal, and to endure.
Created by Kerrie Kent, another voice within the Mortal & Strong campaign, this piece is a dialogue between two journeys—two battles fought in different ways, yet bound by an unspoken understanding. Beverly’s story resonated deeply with Kerrie, both navigating the complexities of invisible illness.

About the artist: Kerrie Kent, an artist from East Sussex, intricately weaves her personal narrative into her artistic endeavours. Her journey, marred by the shadows of congenital heart disease and marked by seven arduous open-heart surgeries, serves as both the canvas and the muse for her creations.
Drawing from the depths of her experiences, Kerrie's work delves into the labyrinth of emotions entwined with her damaged heart. Through her pieces, she navigates the complexities of this vital organ, pondering its function and the skilled interventions of heart surgeons that have defined her life's trajectory.
A recurring theme in her pieces is gold, inspired by the ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi. This practice, which involves repairing broken objects with gold, serves as a potent metaphor for Kerrie's journey - a testament to the beauty found in imperfection and the transformative power of resilience.

About the artist: Art has always been a huge part of my life. Having studied Fine Art in college, and later making the decision not to accept an art school offer to dedicate myself to working full time as a pencil portrait artist, it wasn’t until lockdown in 2020 when I picked up the oil paints and fell in love.
Discovering this new medium reignited my passion of art and painting, and has in turn resulted in multiple exhibitions and Shortlist placings with acclaimed galleries.
Painting was put on the back burner while my photography career was taking off, so being able to pick up the brushes again (especially for a project I’m so passionate about) has been so special and I’m honoured to have the opportunity to paint my voices!

‘Within the portrait and the title are references to the date of Hannah’s first sudden cardiac arrest. scratched, painted in and hidden into the layers the date makes up the background. Merging reference images of Hannah together to create the pose the image invites the viewer to look closer. Hannah’s scar from her implanted defibrillator is visible only when you get up close. The image raises the question of how we respond to invisible disabilities and their impact.’

About the Artist: Charlie Kirkham is a British contemporary artist, trained at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Israel and The Heatherley School of Fine Art, UK. Based in the Midlands, her work reflects on traditional gender roles, technologies and mysticism. Accolades include being shortlisted in the Visual Artist category in the 2023 Passion for Freedom A|wards (eighth place). Charlie was awarded the Visions of Science Award in collaboration with the Milner Centre for Evolution and Edge Arts Bath (Bath University) in 2018. Her work has been showcased in renowned venues, including the Seven House Gallery, NY, USA, The Keck School of Medicine, LA, USA, the RBSA Gallery in Birmingham, UK, Aberystwyth School of Art, Wales and the Mall Galleries, London, UK. She has received funding from STEAMhouse Birmingham (2022, 2024). She is a member of Holyhead Studios Coventry, The Society for Graphic Fine Art (SGFA) and the Visual Artists Association (VAA).

About the artist: Liz is a multi-award winning artist having spent over 10 years producing art inspired by women’s health topics and using art to address health inequalities. In 2020 Liz was a finalist in the Visual Art Open for her sculpture inspired by working on the front-line during the Covid-19 pandemic, and then went on to produce a series of part-surrealism and part conceptualised art using an egg as a symbol of fertility and mortality. Liz derived the concept of Scars of Gold after facing her own mortality and continues to play with a range of styles and mediums depending on the muse.

‘Emma’s love of life, climbing, and how fit she was when diagnosed really resonated with me. The painting shows two sides painted diagonally to depict the hill. One side during treatment, reflecting the sharp wit of her poem. The other showing the softer side afterwards, the cloud with the silver, depicting the love and support you’ve found. The purple patch, the fear you still hold.’

About the artist: I have loved painting and drawing since I was little girl . I attended art school as a young woman but unfortunately my home life changed and I had give up and get a job. Art was put on the back burner for many years with a career and family to cope with, until I became ill in my 40’s.
My physical strength, mental health and confidence plummeted.
I needed to get back to the things I could do and not concentrate on the things I couldn’t. I found my way back to my love for painting particularly conceptual work. Since I’ve had both solo exhibitions and mixed. I’ve been lucky enough to have exhibited in many lovely galleries and met some amazing people.
In my work I like to tell a story and that’s why I’ve loved working with the wonderful women from mortal and strong.
Telling their stories has been an enormous privilege and I’m honoured to be part of something so worthy.
