Welcome to this collaboration of work showcasing a mixture of very talented Falklands photographers, who have all submitted their best images to capture the Essence of Our Community. The idea is to bring the arts to everyone, to interact with the community and to transform this public space into a cultural experience.
The images have been created under the categories of: Architecture, People, Creatures, Sea and Landscapes and Natural Elements.
The money raised from this auction will go towards the purchase of an exciting piece of outdoor play equipment for our community to go alongside the "Shack" youth club on Victory Green.
All of these panels will make a fabulous piece of outdoor or indoor art to enjoy. Each panel measures 1200mm x 1200mm and weighs approx. 8-10kg. The panels will stay up on Ross Road until the end of this auction, so are auctioned as they are. I am happy to send to an overseas purchaser but you will have to pay the cost of delivery.
Julie Halliday, Studio 52 – exhibition organiser Close.

We visited New Island last November after winning the Golden Fleece trip at the Conservation Ball and had an awesome few days sailing around New, Beaver, Green, Staats and Tea Islands with Jerome. It was pretty special standing on top of the cliffs watching the sunset, and equally as memorable walking back to the settlement in the near darkness!

This photo was taken of my husband Colin, fishing in the creek at Mount Rosalie. There was an amazing sky that evening and I was messing around taking sunset pictures, since the fish weren’t biting for me. It turns out my photography is better than my fishing ability!

I was trying to capture the gun as the Falkland Islands Defence Force on the anniversary of Her Majesty The Queen was firing it. I was surprised at the result because with my eye I had never seen the flame coming from the barrel. I was only expecting the smoke but was very pleased with the result.

The photograph was taken on Sea Lion Island in December 2014. On a windy but beautiful summer’s day, at the end of the mating season, the elephant seals lazed languorously having won their harem of mates. This one clearly bares the scars of his hard fought battles.

These large seabirds with a two metre wingspan and a natural lifespan of over 50 years nest on steep slopes covered with tussock grass, on cliffs or flat grassland on the coast. The Falklands hold 70 % of the world population of these beautiful birds. They breed annually using their fanned tail in courting displays before laying just one egg.

I have been in the Falklands with my wife, Moyra, for two years now and have been lucky enough to enjoy the wildlife here both above and below the waves. Diving with the Shallow Marine Survey Group I am always amazed at the diversity and colour of the different species under the water. Not always the bigger creatures, sea lions, dolphins and penguins but the smaller life forms that cover the reefs like a multi coloured-textured blanket. From the keyhole limpet, various types of sea urchins, painted shrimps and crabs to the encrusting algaes, sponges and tunicates. A specimen may be photographed as an individual but when the picture is studied later it is commonly joined by a dozen other living species with-in the frame. The greatest pleasure comes from sharing those experiences with people who have no idea how beautiful the world is under the sea.

We arrived by helicopter to Volunteer Point on an incredibly blustery and rainy day. Fighting against the driving rain we made the 15 minute walk to the penguin colony. The sight of dozens of eyes peering out from bundles of fluffy brown feathers was a sight worth braving the elements for – king penguin chicks huddled together in the rain in their crèches, braving the elements over the long winter and awaiting their parents return from sea.

This image was taken during the Falkland Islands Defence Force’s ‘Exercise Challenger’. Our aim was to traverse across East Falkland during the height of winter, climbing all the highest peaks along the way. There was a lot of snow for the Falklands which made it an excellent training opportunity. We had to set off in the dark and pitch camp after last light due to the short winter days. The advantage of this was that we were able to witness some stunning sunrises and sunsets across the highest peaks. This sunrise was captured over Bodie Peak.

This imagine captures those special moments in the Falklands where everything suddenly goes still. It can be wild and rugged but when the wind stops blowing it is so peaceful. Peace was brought to the islands by those who liberated in us 1982 which we are forever grateful. The Liberation Monument was built to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

This photo was taken around Christmas time, when the weather should be warmer but the wind is ever present! In the evening however, the rapidly changing Falklands weather did not disappoint and the wind dropped to leave the water like glass. The sun setting behind the corral and plinky on Bluff Cove Farm. We have spectacular sunsets in the Falklands. The plinky, a corruption of the Spanish word palenque, is used for hanging beef in the winter months.

I took this photo of a young albatross around the Gull Hill area on the West Falklands. The black-brow hasn’t developed on this bird yet nor has his beak changed to the recognisable pink/orange. Did you know that albatross only return to their colony to breed 7 – 10 years after they have fledged.

This image of a friend of mine captures a real essence of the Falklands, preparing for a race at Camp Sports. Horses are still an essential part of the Falkland Islands and our way of life.

Most often seen soaring on warm thermals ready to prey on almost any small to medium-sized animals that can be caught. This female has her talons firmly around an upland goose. In the Falklands hawks may be seen perching from fence posts or on large rocky outcrops.

The Falkland Islands Government Air Service operate twin engine Britten-Norman islander aircraft. It is an essential part of our way of life in the Islands. A small airport near Stanley despatches the planes with grass strips in many remote locations. It is certainly an adventure seeing the Falklands rugged landscape by air.

Fishing is important to the Falklands economy with squid accounting for a large amount of the catch. The rest of catch consists of various finfish species including rock cod, blue whiting, hake, hoki and toothfish.

When bidding on an auction item, if you enter more than the minimum increment for an item then your bid will be used for proxy bidding. This is how it works:
1. You enter the absolute maximum that you are willing to bid for an item.
2. jumblebee places a bid on your behalf, using the minimum amount required to make you the highest bidder, i.e. current bid price plus bid increment OR the reserve price, if there is one and it can be covered by your proxy bid.
3. jumblebee continues to bid on your behalf, whenever you are outbid by another
member's bid, until your maximum bid is exceeded or the auction is won.
4. jumblebee will notify you by email if your maximum bid is outbid by another member and provided the auction is still running, you will then have a chance to enter a new
maximum bid if you wish.
For example:
The current bid on an auction item is £100. The minimum increment is £10. You enter a bid of £150 (your maximum bid).
Using your bid, but increasing only by the minimum increment, jumblebee sets the current bid to £110.
Another person bids £130 but they are immediately outbid by jumblebee bidding on your behalf and the current bid goes up to £140.
The auction finishes and you have won the auction item at a price of £140.
