Falklands Framed
I'm proud to welcome you to the Falklands Framed Exhibition.
The big idea is to celebrate the Falklands identity and culture and to bring together and show-off the many talented creative artists we have here or connected with the Falkland Islands. Fourty one fabulous artists have been invited to get creative, they have each been given a square frame with which to make an original piece. They can use whatever medium they love to use and as you will see there is a fantastic range of mediums used from paint, pencil and photography, to wool, felt, fabrics, clay and even fret work using recycled timbers. The only thing they needed to do is keep a Falklands theme.
The proceeds from this auction will all go directly to the Falkland Islands charity, the Stephen Jaffray Memorial Fund. Set up in 1993 in memory of young Falkland Islander Stephen Jaffray who sadly died in 1992 aged 21. Stephen's wishes were to raise money to support families who are in desperate need to be with their very sick, close relatives and who do not have the finances to assist themselves. To honor Stephen's wishes his family set up this charity. It has helped assist many Falkland families over the last 20 years but in the past few years the use of the fund has tripled, more money is really needed to enable it to continue.
Falklands Framed will be on view in Stanley in the building of the old Kandy Kabin, adjacent to Tasty Treats on Philomel Street opposite the Globe Tavern.
From Saturday 1st November – Saturday 8th November.
Sat/Sun 10am - 2pm
Mon - Fri 10am - 4pm
The auction will conclude on Saturday 8th November at 2pm in the Falklands.
Winning bidders will be contacted by Julie Halliday to arrange pick up, payment and shipment of artwork. Works will be mailed or can be collected locally free of charge (international shipping must be arranged on a case by case basis).
I really hope you find some thing inspiring here, a piece that you would like to treasure. So don’t miss the opportunity to purchase your own unique piece of art.
Julie Halliday

Medium: oil paint & wood
Artist: I was Born in the islands in 1968.
I see myself as a pretty successful artist and exhibit internationally with works in collections in Europe and South America but my work always retains strong elements of the Falklands distinct characteristics. I am currently working in the UK.
When I heard about the auction I remembered Stephen Jaffray from my school days and how he was such a warm person. And - as my work is generally auto biographical it wasn’t that hard to think of something about home. I used to use scraps of words lying about years ago in my pieces hence I thought it appropriate to do something again, perhaps like that. Simple and direct that’s always my aim, not to complicate things and to put part of myself in the work. I hope Stephen might have agreed and good luck to his family with the fund; his memory is a great way of promoting looking after others which the fund does.

Medium: watercolour, acrylic & pencil
Artist: As the art teacher at the Falkland Islands High School, like most people, I find it difficult trying to get life balanced and to prioritise making time for my own work. I really value the opportunity Julie Halliday has given to myself and some of the very talented students I teach in offering us a chance to be part of this inspired community exhibition and fundraiser.
My piece is based on the idea of a board game capturing some of the places in the Falklands that are special to me and the things that make me love living in this amazing place. It is a light hearted piece that gave me time to reflect on so many happy memories of living here in the Falklands. The style of this piece is very different to my usual gestural and expressive style. This is a snippet of the final piece that uses acrylic paint, watercolour and pencil.

Medium: graphite & pencil
Artist: I am a self-taught artist from Northern Ireland, and I moved to the Falklands last year. I work in graphite and coloured pencil, specialising in wildlife art and pet portraits. I have always had a strong interest in wildlife, and have loved to draw from a very early age. When I draw I really enjoy the challenge of trying to bring the subject to life on the page through capturing tiny details in the fur or feathers. As a medium I prefer pencil because it allows me to work in very fine detail, and achieve the realism that I strive for in my pieces.

Medium: oil paint
Artist: I am is a sixth generation Falkland Islander who creates observational and illustrative works locally on commission and for charities. I studied fine art at the University of the Arts in London but wholeheartedly credit the Falkland Islands for forcing me to pick up a paintbrush.
At six years old I was encouraged to join in and contribute to my mother’s watercolour paintings and inspired by Community School art teacher the late Mrs Simpson MBE, and the beauty of Falklands’ skyscapes and landscapes, I have developed my own style over the decades.
I draw in mixed media with an impressionist lilt and coincidentally have reproduced oil works that are painted over frames, like this piece, for the past five years. I like to use oil to include texture and drama in my Falklands themed scenes and charcoal to increase shadow sensitivity and emotion in my portrait work.
Despite a busy life, work life and running the odd marathon, I have always promised myself I will make time to paint, and will often be jotting down ideas for paintings and compositions on whatever is to hand, which is quite often just my hand!

Medium: acrylic, watercolour & pastel
Artist: I am a 16 year old Falkland Islander, currently studying A-Levels in biology, geography and english language at Peter Symonds College in the UK.
Although I decided not to pursue art post GCSE Level, I have continued to use it as a way of relaxing during and after heavy study periods (especially through exam time!)
The islands create a beautiful backdrop and provide inspiration for the majority of my work; creating a running theme throughout my sketch books.
I have based this piece on a painting I produced during my exam period a couple of years ago. When planning for this exhibition I couldn’t set my heart on solely one image, nor focus my ideas on one aspect of the islands and therefore formed this convergence of my ideas.
I love working with a mixture of media, especially when created with strong acrylic pigments placed alongside contrasting sketches from fine liner pens and vibrant watercolour pastels. All of these elements appear throughout my final piece.

Medium: graphite & ink sticks
Artist: I live in Fox Bay, a village out on West Falkland well away from the urban jungle that is Stanley. As a youngster I had a deal of interest in visual art, I sketched in graphite, charcoal and pastels and did a bit of watercolour painting when I was feeling ambitious. After leaving secondary school and deciding not to pursue art in further education there never seemed to be enough spare time for drawing.
After 18 years without lifting so much as a pencil I decided to make the time, in the intervening years I’d become keen on photography and this rekindled my interest in drawing and painting. One day I just sat down with a piece of copy paper, a ballpoint pen and a photo of my dog Boom, I said to myself ‘get on with it’.
Portraiture is what I like doing best but I’ll paint any subject, landscapes, architecture, wildlife, still life and so on.

Paper and mixed media
Artist: I am a 28 year old 7th generation Falkland Islander who is absolutely passionate about the Islands. I am currently reading business with marketing management at Northumbria University.
Being creative has always been a big part of my life and over the years I have thoroughly enjoyed trying out a wide variety of crafts. In 2012 I decided to put my creativity to use and so I launched Heart of the Falklands. I create jewellery, baubles and keepsakes that contain Falkland Islands sand as well as designing and creating paper cut art.
Falklands sand and paper cuts form the basis of my Falklands Framed piece. Paper cut art can be created in a variety of ways but my preferred method is to use a scalpel to cut out a design from paper.
I am constantly inspired by my surroundings and experiences and know there is a lot more still to come from myself and Heart of the Falklands and I am excited by how it will progress over the coming years. I am hugely excited to be a part of the Falklands Framed project and exhibition.

Artist: The inside of my frame has been painted using acrylic paint with an image of a rough sea and sea spray. The piano music and words assembled at the top are from Christopher Lanham’s Song of the Falklands. The music is coming from a flute that is being played by a small girl. The music turns into the sea, which though rough, is beautiful. This reflects my idea that music is something that I do and forever will connote with the Falklands.

Artist: I based my frame on one of the pristine landscapes in the Falkland Islands. I then thought of the plants that we get in the Falklands to decorate the frame. The plants I chose were scurvy grass growing amongst diddle- dee. This gives my frame colour, from the dark brown as my base. This compliments with the red diddle- dee and the green which clashes with the red, but works harmoniously with my background. I have used watercolour for my centre piece, and acrylic for the frame.

Artist: My Falklands frame is inspired by the past. I have used modelling, block painting and photography on my frame. The idea behind my piece was to create a small scene on a beach, using an old book, polaroids and sand. Central to my piece is one of my favourite poems by Lord Alfred Tennyson In Memoriam A.H.H that reminds with me of what I think is important in life and also to evoke the idea that you have not lived until you have seen the Falklands.

Medium: Falkland felted wool
Artist: I was born in Kaliningrad, Russia. I came to the Falkland Islands with my husband Sasha and two children in 1998. I work in the Fisheries Department as a marine biologist. Since my arrival here I have immersed myself in the traditional crafts of dyeing, spinning, felting and weaving, using locally produced wool. I found my passion in needle felting. I could describe it as ‘Creating a painting with a natural material – wool’. The Falkland Islands possess their amazing colours bound into the natural surroundings. I hope in the future to be able to capture more of this uniqueness.

The detail depicted within this work comes from many years of studying the ocean and the creatures living in it. The octopus represented in the artwork is an example of the local Falkland fauna. I have taken a little artistic license and added some glow-in-the-dark suckers.

Medium: acyrlic, mixed media & crayon
Artist: I thought a lot about what I was going to do, I was going to do an underwater theme but then I thought my favourite animal in the whole world is a barn owl, they are very well known in the Falklands. I was interested in showing an owl in flight, and then coming into land.
On the outer frame I have used mixed media with paint and white crayons to produce the feathers. On the inside I have used ripped out pages from books, black paint, and tea bags for the splatter effect. And finally I have painted the owls with watercolour, and made the wings out of modroc, which has then been painted.
I have enjoyed it very much.

Artist: I am 24 years old. I was born and grew up in the Falkland Islands before travelling to the UK to embark on further studies. After leaving University with a BA (Hons) in contemporary art I began a career in education, and am currently living in West Yorkshire before beginning my early years teacher training at the University of Huddersfield in September.
I try to keep up with my artistic interests alongside my work, in particular making and selling greetings cards and mixed-media illustrations. The unique beauty of the Falklands has always inspired my art work, and I intend to return to home to settle once I have completed my studies.

Artist: Growing up in Yorkshire, my Dad sparked my interest in art at a very young age by teaching me how to draw. After expanding my interest, I went to the Cumbria College of Art and Design where I graduated with a HND in graphic design. A little while later I met my wife, a Falkland Islander, taking my first trip to the Falkland Islands to meet the prospective in-laws in 2008. Fast forward three more years and a job opportunity allowed us to return to the Islands to work at Cape Dolphin, living at Elephant Beach Farm in the north of East Falkland.
The different pace of life in the Falklands allowed me to reignite my passion for graphic design and start drawing again. Soon I had a regular comic strip appearing in the Penguin News and since then I have taken on a number of different projects from corporate branding to personal commissions.
For my frame, I moved away from my preferred digital format and thought I would go back to my childhood and doodle things about the Falklands until I ran out of space. I named my frame after the ancient saying; One by one, the penguins are stealing my sanity!

Artist: I was born in Stanley and grew up at Fox Bay. Over the years I have been commissioned and painted nearly
fifty stamps for the Falkland Islands and South Atlantic with mostly all of the works representing wildlife and birds.
At present I live and farm in Orkney, Scotland now painting mainly farm livestock, dog and horse commissions. I still enjoy producing many wildlife watercolours for the Falklands.

Medium: giclee prints, wriggly tin, fine silver & bronze
Artist: I have been making and creating things for as long as I can remember and have always being doing something crafty or creative. Growing up in New Zealand, I got through high school with a good mix of subjects, it always seemed that art & design was my passion. I was desperate to do a Graphic Design Diploma in
design & photography which through quite a few challenges along the way,
I did just that.
I have worked in the design industry ever since, dabbling in photography when I could, it wasn’t until I came to the Falklands in 2001 that I started experimenting more with my photography and ended up setting up my own business and gallery Studio 52. I wanted to showcase my landscape and nature photography plus my design creations, they just work so well together. My work has a distinct Falklands focus and I enjoy sharing my pieces as premium fine art and canvas prints and gift focused products. I am continually striving to make images that aspire to be works of art, using my design, drawing and photography skills.
In August 2012, I gained a diploma in precious metal clay, so I can create my own jewellery pieces, working with local pebbles, textures and organic material.
My piece is a mixture of mediums using my photography and metal work. It is inspired by the rough textures and things you find in camp like wriggly tin, peeling paint and old wooden windows. I have added a ‘blue-buzzer’ typically found in Falkland camp houses but i’ve made him in fine silver and a curious little black-faced ground tyrant inspired from a visit to Saunders Island, he is made from bronze.

Recycled material, acrylic & wood
Artist: The idea of making a clock came to me early, as I wanted to produce something functional. The theme of hares by moonlight was also there from the beginning. I live in Darwin among a large community of hares, whom I admire because we cohabit so closely yet they conduct their lives so distantly. They have a fearless, ethereal quality that appeals to me.
The view in this piece is that from my sun lounge (or should this be ‘moon lounge’?) where most of my creative time is spent. The bottom left corner represents the 19th century peat-brick and gorse wall that bisected the Darwin isthmus until it was partly destroyed in 1982, during the battle for Goose Green. Much of the original wall can still be seen in Darwin. In the top right corner is the constellation of Lepus, the hare, picked out in tiny crystals. It can be seen on summer nights near the constellation of Orion.
My ever-patient and skilful husband, Graham, played a large part in the manufacture and assembly of this piece. Other than the frame, all the components are made from found or recycled materials such as the lid of a biscuit tin, an old door, a diet coke can and a loofah.

Artist: At no moment had I ever thought that my love and passion for wildlife and conservation would lead the way into the world of military art. How could I have known when I flew to the Falklands in January 1996 to write and illustrate my book The Falkland Islands - an Artists Portfolio that my journey would open a window on a world well beyond the realms of the stunning landscape, fauna and flora of those beautiful South Atlantic Islands.
As the Tristar approached the Islands to be dutifully escorted by a pair of Tornado F3 jet fighters, I had the intense felling I was about to experience a new chapter in my life. I would defy anyone not to have been totally overwhelmed by this incredible experience. Having being given a tour of all the operations within the base, my imagination and portfolio opened before my eyes.
In spite of this new career path and having now worked with the military since 1996, I have never deserted my wildlife roots. I have lived and worked in Zambia, South Africa and Zimbabwe where I had my first solo exhibition in 1980. I would like to think that through the years working with the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation I have been able to positively champion the cause of wildlife conservation through my art and in the last few years taking wildlife tours and being part of expedition teams. I hugely enjoy sharing the beauty of these wild places, whilst gathering yet more material to paint.
Through my travels I have met the most inspiring individuals and made many, many special friends and seen and witnessed the most uniquely beautiful things.
My father David Shepherd has been my greatest inspiration as the architect of hard work and enthusiasm, for his eternal ability to embrace this beautiful world we live in and for the conservation of wildlife and all he cares so deeply about. »

Artist: My painting is based on my love for Falkland life. The animal to me personally that represents the Falklands best is the swooning, graceful, majestic black-browed albatross.
I have used acrylic paint to create a nice bold sky blue colour with clouds streaming across the frame. My sea is typically Falkland Islands – harsh, choppy and slightly calm, though. The centre piece of the frame is the star of the show, the albatross (just slightly off diagonal) using realistic colours.

Medium: watercolour & driftwood
Artist: I was born in Chile in 1984. At 14 years old I started a career as a painter when I took soft pastel and painting classes. In 2003 I was accepted at Pontifical Catholic University of Chile where I started a career as a visual artist with a second degree in Oriental Aesthetics and a specialisation in print techniques.
I worked at the National Museum of Arts for 2 years as a guide and as a curator. With knowledge in digital media like Photoshop and InDesign, in 2011
I moved to Colorado in the United States and in 2013 I decided to move out to the Falkland Islands and start my studies in watercolour.
Little bird on the sand was created from a mixture of techniques, watercolour and found objects. This artwork is based on the different objects and fauna that we can find at the beach. Where the water can bring all kinds of elements together from different places and how these elements start to form a part of the natural environment through ageing, like the camouflage that makes them part of the same story even though they can come from a different origin.

Medium: Falkland felted wool & acrylic
Artist: I live in an annexe to my beautiful purpose-built studio, aka The Rookery,
at Dunnose Head on West Falkland. An oasis of peace with stunning sea views, this place is full of light, colour, texture and inspiration. Powered by wind and solar energy, it is also home to my small business, Funky Fibres.
Since retiring from sheep farming, I have had more time to devote to my beloved wool crafts. Having enjoyed spinning, dyeing, knitting and wet felting over many years, I now concentrate on dry (i.e. needle) felting which incorporates most of the above skills.
I use embellishers, hand stitching and beading, aiming to create items that make people smile. Using wool from the farm here as a quality base, I add colour, bling and pizzazz – along with a dash of wild imagination – to create my one-off works of textile art.
I love teaching, and welcome day visitors as well as residential students to my home.
This particular piece, entitled Welcome to the Dance, celebrates Falkland shindigs, which tend to be fun, lively and exhausting events. I was tempted to include a packet of paracetamol, but thought better of it…

Medium: acrylic, Falklands pebbles, driftwood & polymer clay
Artist: I ‘m originally from North Yorkshire and have now lived in the Falklands for almost five years. I work at the Falkland Islands Tourist Board. I’ve always enjoyed creative pursuits, taking art and drama at school, media production at college and then on to advertising at university. From the first time I cut up a skirt to make a top when
I was ten years old (and getting told off by my mum), I’ve recycled, customised and created my own clothes, bags and purses. My company Oii Clothing is yet to get off the ground but I am slowly creating a stockpile.
Since I was first asked to take part in this project I have sketched and planned and scrapped ideas before deciding on the final look of the piece. I’ve always loved using mixed media and after taking a look around me for inspiration I used some natural Falklands materials – most of which were found beach combing. The amount of great art produced in the Falklands is what led me to add my mini canvas to my frame.
This project has been fun and scary and has inspired me to take more chances with my art.

Medium: Scraper board, pencil and acrylic
Artist: The artwork that I have created for the ‘Falklands Framed’ project is a combination of scraperboard, where the technique involves scratching the design into the ink, graphite pencil drawing, and finally acrylic paint. I wanted to play with the contrast of the hard and soft tones of the different media and the positive and negative quality of the drawing versus the scraperboard and painting. I have played with a realistic portrayal of the Falkland plants in the drawing element, and the more stylised rendition of the Falkland plants in the frame and the town of Stanley. I enjoyed using a variety of different media to weave together this juxtaposition of styles to create my vision of the islands and their rich floral diversity.

Medium: Falkland stamps
Artist: Born in the fens of Lincolnshire, I first arrived in the Falkland Islands Christmas eve 1959 and for many years until the present time have followed a free lance career as an artist, designer, photographer, naturalist and author. I was trained in graphics, botanical illustration and design at art college. Stamp designing is perhaps one of my main specialities and I became a Crown Agents stamp designer in the early 1980s. Book designing and publishing is another aspect of my work which comes under the name of Design In Nature.
My art and photographs have been exhibited in London, New York and Buenos Aires.
The raw material and inspiration for much of my art is found in nature. The design and colour in nature would be my ultimate standard. I might strive to produce a piece of art depicting an element of nature, a brilliant coloured algae, a delicately formed leaf, a bird or animal, but believe one can never achieve such perfection. I get satisfaction during the process of producing a piece of art or a photograph, but rarely ever can I say I have achieved the standard in my mind’s eye.
Two different mediums or tools are used, the one employing brush and paints, usually water colours with the occasional addition of acrylics, the other a camera and photography. In my paintings of nature, I will rarely if ever depict subjects that I do not know in life. The same extends to my interest in portraying through a camera, a human face. For me the most successful portraits should not only convey a visual image, but the life and feeling behind them, only in this way will they be a success to the artist and, more importantly, to the subject.

Medium: oil paint
Artist: I was born and raised in Stanley and stayed until I was 13 when I moved to the south of England. I have been back and forth ever since between the Falklands and the UK and also lived for a year in Spain. I studied art at college and ever
since then have kept it up as a hobby. I mainly work with acrylics and watercolours and find I paint in a very different style depending on which I use. My college art education was very varied; we used inks, pastels, oils, charcoal and even did some work using sticks in place of paintbrushes. I usually work from photographs, but as a terrible photographer I often rely on friends and family for source material, which I am very grateful for!
In recent years I have donated to charity and sold various pieces of my work, which has been very fulfilling.

since then have kept it up as a hobby.

Medium: fabric, textiles & mixed media
Artist: I have recently been intrigued by the idea of scale so when I was asked to be involved in this project I had a clear and immediate image in my head of what I wanted to do – a six foot tall pale maiden (the Falklands national flower). It has been a completely new way of working for me – moving forward one step at a time with no guidance, no previous path to follow, just my own striving to turn the internal image into a textile reality.
I live in Stanley with my partner and our two amazing boys. I have been making things with a threaded needle for over twenty years. My making takes place ten minutes at a time, fitted in around being a full time mum.

Medium: Oil paint and gold leaf
Artist: I have been painting since I was a child. My father, also an artist, encouraged me to learn to paint anything and everything. I have travelled the world and dedicated my artistic life to the discovery and expression of beauty as I see it.
In the mid 1970s my family and I moved to the Falkland Islands to assist
the Baha’i community. At the time I thought that the isolation would mean the end of my painting, but instead it allowed me to refine and refocus my technique and approach.
Before the Falklands conflict in 1982 I spent a lot of time painting portraits of native Falkland Islanders, a project that became the core of my 1983 show in London bringing wide attention to my work. My portrait of our family’s baby sitter, Anya Cofre (nee Smith) ended up on the cover of the Sunday Times Magazine in London.
Since returning to the United States in 1991, my work has received international acclaim and I have been designated a Living Master™ by the Art Renewal Centre.
My paintings can be found in prestigious institutions from a Cathedral in the South Pacific to the US Air Force Academy to corporate headquarters in Manhattan, as well as in the private residences of kings, judges, bishops, doctors and collectors all over the world.
My choice of subjects – mainly the human face and figure but also natural things like rocks and water and even the wings of birds – come from a desire to portray spiritual qualities I see in the real world.
My father told me time and again that I must learn to paint anything and everything and I have practiced for more than thirty years to do just that. But as with any other artist, I have tried to follow my heart and explore those things that move me, and have found that realism is the best expression for my art at this time.
I hope you enjoy the work.

Medium: fabric & cottons
Artist: I have been living in the Falklands for just over a year, having moved here from Qatar, via a short visit to the UK. I am here with my husband, who is here on a two year contract as a teacher at the local primary school.
I was taught to embroider by my mother-in-law, who lives in the UK; and coupled with my love for fabrics, I have developed this into my own style, which is basic, free and messy. Stanley and the surrounding area have provided me with great inspiration for much creative thought over the past year – a small community neatly perched on a wild and rugged precipice.

Medium: recycled material, copper & Falkland stamps
Artist: I studied Art & Design to foundation level at Salisbury College (where I grew up) before deciding to change tack and study biology. I work at Falklands Conservation, however, I have always retained an interest in art having dabbled on several projects (mostly commissions and for charity fund raising). I focus on nature and enjoy experimenting with new mediums and materials.
This piece is called The News Bird, a local name given to the dark-faced ground tyrant, according to its friendly manner of approaching people and its twittering song, hence the news bird. I decided to use recycled metals and incorporated old Falkland stamps, the Penguin News and a handwritten letter to represent the news.
I used copper, biscuit tins and wire to construct the bird and frame, with several processes to achieve the effect of the metal including the blue aged patina of the copper.
I reduced the size of the frame (hope that was allowed!) as the processes were long and laborious and I would never have enough materials to complete the whole frame.

Medium: Oil paint
Artist: I have been a teacher and professional painter for as long as I can remember (I’m old so my memory isn’t that good!) My wife, Sally and I run a painting holiday centre in the South of France and this is where we got to know fellow artist, Richard Cockwell from the Falklands who encouraged me to apply for a Shackleton Scholarship. I travelled to the Falklands to paint horses on the East and West Falkland. My exhibition of these works was held in the Falkland Islands Government Office (FIGO) in London, these works were eventually brought back down to the Islands by veterans.
A few years ago now I made a second voyage to the islands at the invitation of Byron Marine to create fifteen marine based paintings. Last year again at the invitation of Lewis from Byron Marine I sailed to South Georgia to work on another collection of marine paintings which were also exhibited in FIGO and are, as I write, on their way to their new home in Stanley.
I have exhibited throughout Europe and the United States and my work is in major collections throughout the world (I know that every painter says that usually ‘cos his aunty in New Zealand has something he painted when he was twelve!)
The seal pup I have created for my frame is painted in oils and is from South Georgia.

Medium: acrylic
Artist: I got this inspiration from school, I’m always sitting in school looking at lined paper doing work, doodling on it and writing ideas. My image on the inside is a remarkable photo I took of the Lady Elizabeth. My family and I love to take our dog out for a walk by the Lady Liz and the breath-taking sceneries that can be seen are amazing so I thought that it would look great in my frame.
To complete this idea I am using acrylic paint because I thought that it is a very solid material and my idea would need a strong look.

Medium: made using reclaimed/recycled timber, cut entirely using a restored and much love A1 treadle fretsaw.
Artist: I was fascinated by natural history from an early age, taking up taxidermy in my teens, and although entirely self-taught I have become a highly accredited Master of the Guild of Taxidermists.
For more than 20 years I have worked on commissions for UK museums with my work taking me as far afield as Taiwan and South Georgia.
Throughout my career I have become skilled at working with many different materials: wood, plastics and the natural elements I find in the field, I think I have a keen eye for detail.
Originally from the UK, I came to the Falklands in 2001 to work with the Falkland Islands Museum and National Trust. For the last ten years I have made the Falklands my home. Spending a lot of my spare time exploring the Falklands extensive coasts, mountains, enjoying the open landscapes and observing the unique wildlife.
Most recently I have been refining my sculpting skills and last year I was honoured to receive a commission to sculpt a bronze bust of Margaret Thatcher.
My frame is created in traditional Falklands fashion, it is made entirely from reclaimed timber (found in a skip!) Most of the wood was cut using a restored and much loved hobbies A1 treadle fretsaw, found in a sorry state at the back of a wool shed.
The creative concept was originally designed by Kate Stenning to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Falklands and portrays some of the main elements of the islands.

Medium: oil paint
Artist: Born and brought up in England, I was sacked from the art school one year Foundation Course I was attending after being involved in a sit-in (quite the thing in those days!) The year was useful in spite of the distractions. Moving to the Falklands in 1971 was an adventure and I found the Islands a huge surprise falling in love with them, with the beautiful landscape, the wildlife, the light reflecting off the sea, the way of life and the characters and faces
around me.
I didn’t do any painting for years just kept drawing and looking and took up painting a bit more seriously in 2001. The subjects I work with are a result of seeing things that capture the attention, not necessarily very “beautiful” or even on first sight particularly “interesting” - that just have something arresting, a hook or something that captures attention. I work mainly in oil paint, pastel and various drawing media. Both oils and pastels allow time to think and make alterations so my painting tends to evolve as the work progresses.
The painting for Falklands Framed is one of a few I have done of a landscape, a sky, some light and reflections in a window. Generally a less than perfect window, maybe with some cracks or broken panes or old flaking paint on the frame, something that takes it away from being perfect. The imperfect, ageing, disintegrating subject is so much more a reflection of life than perfection, smoothness, glossiness, attractive as those characteristics are. So that’s what I tend to do.

Medium: paper, acrylic & photo paper
Artist: My frame was inspired by nature specifically the Falklands Queen of Fritillary butterfly. The outside of my frame is made up with lots of different quotes and writing about the Falklands from books on the Islands, these have been glued onto the frame. For the inside of my frame I have used one of my own photographs of the butterfly. I decided to layer the wings to make it have a three dimensional effect.

Medium: Falklands felted wool
Artist: After growing up in the English lake district and studying geography at Edinburgh University, I caught the travel bug and discovered that being a cook was a great way to see the world. I cooked in Switzerland, Scotland, Norway, on horse-back treks in Outer Mongolia and in fishing camps in Northern Russia, before coming to the Falklands to cook at Port Howard Lodge in 1996.
I now live with my husband Kevin and our son Toby on our farm on East Falkland. I manage Bluff Cove Lagoon Tours, a penguin excursion we run as a farm diversification to cater for the visiting cruise ship passengers.
I started felting in 2010 and whilst enjoying trying many textile crafts, my favourite remains creating felted pieces with a Falkland theme.
The frame is called The Hunted Hunter. A gentoo penguin swimming through kelp.

Medium: acrylic, gesso & rope
Artist: My frame was inspired by vessels and the fishing industry. I came up with the idea to use fisherman’s knots because I visited a vessel the night before. I was there with my mum (Phoebe) because she works for Consolidated Fisheries Limited and the vessel is owned by them. The knots were hung up on a wall so I asked if they would make me some and they did, so that’s when I had the idea to use them for my frame. The materials I have used are fishing line (rope), acrylic paint and gesso to make the islands slightly more 3-dimensional.

Medium: gesso & acrylic
Artist: My inspiration has come from trees, nature and birds. The outside of my frame is painted with gesso paint primer to look like the bark of a tree because I love the structure and colour tone it brings. Gesso is a paint that holds the air inside while drying thus keeping the texture. The focal point of the frame ties in the Falklands theme as it is an acrylic painting of a caracara up close. It took me a while to decide on the caracara but hopefully I have captured their strong demeanour.

Medium: ceramic & paper
Artist: Born in Scotland, I am a ceramist, singer, songwriter and most recently farmer!
I first visited the Falkland Islands around 12 years ago. Now, being drawn back to the Islands I live with my partner on our farm in San Carlos, where I run my ceramics studio White Grass Ceramics.
I usually work with inspiration from nature but for some reason, I started my frame with the colours first in mind, which didn’t really lend themselves to my natural surroundings, acid green and hot pink. This did mean that my project took a very different turn. I started by using the process of decopatch (a decorative fab and funky paper craft) on the actual frame and then used various painting and glaze techniques for the 9 tiles in the centre.
I used a very organic approach to the whole project, it was a lot of fun.

Medium: watercolour on silk & found objects
Artist: I grew up in London, under the main flight path for Heathrow, so to say that there is a contrast between my life there and here now, would be an understatement. I have been teaching in the Falkland Islands since August 1998 – when I came to these amazing islands for an 18 month contract with Camp Education – and have never left.
I fell in love with the breathtaking scenery, stunning skies and clear air immediately! Falling in love with my islander husband came later, along with my two gorgeous children. I now live in Stanley and teach at the Infant Junior School. However, camp life, the solitude, wildlife and wilderness will always be a big part of my heart and that of my family’s.
This silk painting is based upon one of my own photographs taken on Saunders Island. I love the majesty of king penguins and the wide open skies of the Falklands. The sand covering the frame comes from Surf Bay and the shells, stones and other natural objects, from various beaches around the Islands. The penguin skull is most probably a gentoo or Magellanic penguin as it was found on Bull Point, North Arm.

When bidding on an auction item, if you enter more than the minimum increment for an item then your bid will be used for proxy bidding. This is how it works:
1. You enter the absolute maximum that you are willing to bid for an item.
2. jumblebee places a bid on your behalf, using the minimum amount required to make you the highest bidder, i.e. current bid price plus bid increment OR the reserve price, if there is one and it can be covered by your proxy bid.
3. jumblebee continues to bid on your behalf, whenever you are outbid by another member's bid, until your maximum bid is exceeded or the auction is won.
4. jumblebee will notify you by email if your maximum bid is outbid by another member and provided the auction is still running, you will then have a chance to enter a new maximum bid if you wish.
For example:
The current bid on an auction item is £100. The minimum increment is £10. You enter a bid of £150 (your maximum bid).
Using your bid, but increasing only by the minimum increment, jumblebee sets the current bid to £110.
Another person bids £130 but they are immediately outbid by jumblebee bidding on your behalf and the current bid goes up to £140.
The auction finishes and you have won the auction item at a price of £140.
