Artists At Home - Make a Bid & Help the Homeless
Read more ...
It’s been a tough year for many of us, but there are others in our community who have had a really hard time.
Members of Artists At Home would like to give something back this Christmas by raising money for a local charity, The Upper Room, which does so much for the homeless. Their vision is to support & improve the lives of vulnerable people in our community. Participating in our charity auction will help provide hot meals, clothing, toiletries, help finding & applying for jobs, as well as bilingual counselling for those with mild to moderate mental health issues. theupperroom.org.uk
Artists At Home is a West London group founded in 1973, with members across Chiswick, Hammersmith & Shepherds Bush. Disciplines include: painting, glass-making, ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, photographs, textiles, and jewellery. This year, our annual open studios event went virtual. We updated our website, with each artist having their own mini site, showcasing up to 50 pieces from each of our 100 talented artists. www.artistsathome.co.uk
Based upon this success we’re conducting this two-week Christmas online auction.
Bidding begins Monday 16th November 2020, 10am (UK)
& closes Sunday 29th November 2020, 9pm (UK)
Our generous artists are each donating a percentage of the winning bid price to The Upper Room – you can see this figure in the description of each individual lot. Some artists are donating 100% of the proceeds, and many are giving 50% or more. Postage (extra) or collection to be arranged separately.
A winning bid not only secures a unique desirable item for you or your friends & family this Christmas, but also makes a donation to the homeless.
There are no reserve prices and the bid increments can be seen in the lot details, as well as other information about it including a link to the artist’s page on the AAH website where you can see more of their work.
Once the auction closes at 9pm on 29th November winning bidders will be contacted directly by Jumblebee for their payment. Once payment has been received the agreed percentage will be donated to The Upper Room, and the balance returned to the artist.
So please register now & get bidding!

My paintings are increasingly large and abstract expressionist - incorporating colours and themes plucked from the imagination. Highly textural, they are created using various techniques, such as acrylic pouring, overpainting in oils and gold leaf.

As a West London artist, a city landscape artist, I am inspired by the flux and flow of the natural world: the seasons, weather, water and light. My work is an experiment in capturing the constant movement of the River Thames: charting where I live, the topography, the continuance of the landscape shrouded by the city, defying the wild and open beauty of the sky above.

Some of Joanna Brendon’s works are more abstract than others. The horizon may shift, the picture plane tilt and there is a degree of ambiguity.
“With a landscape subject matter that is often intensely familiar to her, Joanna Brendon’s bold, abstracting way of working creates paintings rich in dramatic feeling and entirely mysterious in character” Nicholas Usherwood, curator.

“I draw a lot of inspiration from my surroundings. Strand-on-the-Green is my favourite stretch of the river. I start with sketching, photographing and then use a medium that I feel will capture and present my vision. I believe in art as a form of therapy, meditation, a way to connect with myself and with others. I am very keen on sharing the same via my ‘Art Social’ workshops.”

“I have been a garden designer for most of my life, but am increasingly enjoying time spent painting. I enjoy experimenting with different styles and media. I only really started painting ten years ago as a therapy, when my son was seriously ill with depression. I joined Anthea Craigmyle’s painting group and learnt how helpful it can be to lose yourself in trying to make an image. I am so pleased to be able to support this wonderful local charity.”

Miss Naysmith (1937-2015), was a well-known Chiswick character. A former concert pianist (trained at the Royal College of Music), she fell on hard times financially and emotionally in the 1970s and moved into her car, where she lived for decades. I often saw her tramping the streets with her supermarket trolley, her feet bound in plastic bags. She didn’t have a dog, but I wanted to give her a friend.

For many years I have I have beachcombed the Thames and waterways of London, researching my finds, and transforming them into jewellery and sculpture. Now that we all worry about waste and over-consumption, rescuing these lost pieces of history is truly satisfying. Their visual beauty is restored and each piece of Madlark jewellery is unique. The peacock was a favourite symbol in Western art signifying beauty and eternal life.

I make paintings in the landscape motif, using semi-abstract images to suggest the experience of being in a place. When I travel away from London to paint, it is usually to Hampshire or Dorset. Both places are nearby and full of inspiration and subject matter. Weather preventing....I use the collections in London's many galleries to learn from such great landscape painters as Corot, Rubens, Deibenkorn, Morandi, and Macke.

I explore painting as a process of experience, sourcing memories and the unconscious, in which the paint marks reflect the passing time and movement of thoughts. We often turn to art to understand our thoughts and emotions, a still space in contrast to our internal chaotic existence. Paint and brush become a vehicle to bridge the gulf between us and our unconscious, the canvas becoming a screen of reflection.

For Sally, making art is a passion and a pleasure. Personal experience, cultural or historical subjects tend to be her inspiration. From printmaking to pastels, from oils to mixed media, Sally’s portfolio is exciting and varied. ‘Acteon’ was inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphosis and the Titan exhibition at the National Gallery in 2012.

Painting directly from life, Eve is preoccupied with the wonders of nature and the human form, exploring both their presence and absence in space. Unceasingly concerned with colours and their relationships, Eve explores what happens when two colours meet, how they dance side-by-side, and what occurs at the borderline. Understanding colour is fundamental to her creative process. Eve studied at The Heatherley School of Fine Art and The Royal Drawing School.

I enjoy the camaraderie of the potter's studio at my Mother's house. I love the creativity of pottery - in every stage the pots change and develop - often turning out in quite an unexpected way. Last year several of my pots went abroad and I love to think of them, and ones that have not gone so far afield, being enjoyed in their new homes.
