"This edition of Hamlet is the one I bought in 1985 to take up to Oxford University with me; I studied English Literature at Lady Margaret Hall from 1985-1988.

The highlighting and notes are from three periods:
- My studies at LHM
-1990-1, when I was appearing at the Vaudeville Theatre in Hidden Laughter by Simon Gray, and learned the Hamlet soliloquies in my time off, in the hope they would come in useful (which they later did).
- 2000, when I did initial preparations for playing Hamlet at the Royal Shakespeare Company for a year and three days in 2000-2001. My scripts from that run are now in the University of Birmingham's Shakespeare Institute Library

The stamp at the front is from the West End run of Single Spies by Alan Bennett, which ran at the Queen's Theatre (now the Soundheim) in 1989. My mother, Prunella Scales, was playing 'HMQ' (Elizabeth II) in that run- the first person to play a ruling monarch on the British stage in nearly 400 years.

The 'ETL' on the title page stands for Exit the Lemming, my tag and my Twitter handle. I still use it.
