Three Landscapes, Three Ways of Looking

Jacob Buckland seems less interested in describing landscape than in discovering how much of it can be suggested before description becomes unnecessary.

The three works in the Oriel Q auction demonstrate this beautifully.

In Woodland, the forest rises from a wonderfully uncertain ground of washed colour. Trees are sometimes trunks, sometimes scratches, sometimes little more than nervous vertical marks. Buckland allows ink, paint and line to overlap without insisting that they agree with one another. It has the feeling of walking into woodland and gradually becoming aware of its complexity — the eye constantly choosing what to notice.

Trees is quieter and perhaps more lyrical. A great pale trunk bends through the composition, beautifully drawn but never imprisoned by drawing. Around it are fragments: twigs, washes, tiny botanical observations and sudden incidents of colour. There is an especially delicious patch of yellow near the foot of the tree — precisely the sort of apparently minor event upon which an entire painting can depend.

And then comes River Wye.

Here Buckland compresses the landscape almost to abstraction. The delicacy of the woodland drawings gives way to weight: deep plum, black, blue and flashes of white, ochre and burning red. Yet the same intelligence is present. It is still landscape assembled from remembered sensations rather than obediently copied appearances.

What connects all three is Buckland's understanding that landscape is not a fixed view waiting politely to be painted. It is an accumulation of looking.

A branch noticed.
A colour remembered.
A line followed.
Something glimpsed and then lost.

These are generous works because they leave something unfinished — not on the paper, but in the looking. Buckland gives us enough to enter the landscape, and then rather wisely leaves us to find our own way through it.

Lawrence Mathias is a Pembrokeshire-born artist who returned to West Wales after some 35 years in London. His wide-ranging practice encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, film, performance, music and poetry. He has exhibited throughout the UK and in Europe, both independently and with groups including ArtCan, and has undertaken numerous community and public-art projects. In 2023 his solo exhibition An Overarching Impulse was presented at Fitzrovia Gallery, London. Lawrence is currently Gallery Manager at Oriel Q.

Hilary Bryanston (b.1951) is a Welsh-based painter and sculptor working across painting, carved wood and stone, ceramics and assemblage. Trained at Newport College of Art, she has exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions at Chapter Arts Centre, Wolverhampton Art Gallery, Neath Museum & Art Gallery and the Midlands Arts Centre, Birmingham. Her highly individual work draws on landscape, mythology, symbolism and an imagined inner world, often combining painting with carving and incised marks. Bryanston has a longstanding association with Oriel Q, which has previously presented a dedicated exhibition of her work.

Trained at Camberwell School of Art and Cardiff Metropolitan University, he won the Gold Medal for Craft and Design at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in 2011. His ceramics draw upon the coastline, geology and found materials of West Wales, exploring the territory between functional pottery and sculptural form.

Martin White has a long connection with Oriel Q Gallery. He exhibited with and helped at the gallery during its years at the Queen’s Hall in Narberth, before Oriel Q moved to its present home while retaining its name and identity.

Painter, illustrator and teacher of life drawing, White has worked across drawing, print and mixed media. These three works therefore have a particular resonance in this fundraising auction: Martin White’s work is, in a sense, returning to Oriel Q.

The two figure studies reveal his fascination with the observed human body—not the grand theatrical pose, but the fleeting gesture, the turned head, the moment between poses. His broken, searching line allows the figures to hover somewhere between observation and memory.

Bowl, Stones, Tomato shows another White altogether: playful, graphic and wonderfully odd. The blazing tomato sits amongst quieter stone-like forms, transforming an ordinary still life into something unexpectedly monumental.

Born in Cambridge, he studied at York University and the Courtauld Institute before moving to Wales in 1990. His grandfather, the German-born British painter Martin Bloch (1883–1954), remains an important influence.

Rossiter's work is held in private collections in Britain and internationally and is currently represented commercially at considerably higher prices. These three works have been entered by the artist at special starting prices for Oriel Q's fundraising auction.

Raphaelle Fieldhouse is a Welsh multidisciplinary artist with an international reputation in body painting and theatrical and media make-up. A twice World Bodypainting Champion, she has worked across television, performance and live body art as well as drawing and mixed-media practice. Her work combines exceptional observational drawing with an interest in the body as both subject and artistic surface. She is currently artist-in-residence at Rhosygilwen in West Wales.

Hooks & Clips and The Shed Project

ee John Phillips is a Pembrokeshire-based artist, illustrator and obsessive draughtsman. The Shed Project began from his late grandfather Handel Jones's tool shed. His grandmother Myrtle had preserved the shed after Handel died in 1994, almost as a mausoleum. Phillips decided to make an illustrated inventory of every object in it.

And “every object” really does mean every object. His rules include drawing every item that can physically be picked up, drawing all the contents of opened packets, leaving sealed packets unopened, and—crucially—drawing every example when there are multiples. He estimates the shed contains more than 100,000 objects and has so far drawn roughly 9,000.

That transforms what might initially look like attractive illustrations of tools into something much more interesting: drawing as archive, memory, family history and archaeology of working-class material culture.

His grandfather was a coal miner and engineer, and Phillips has described the 9 × 9 ft shed as embodying his post-industrial South Wales mining heritage and the post-war ethos of “make do and mend.”

There is something particularly tender about this figure. Arms folded, head turned away, she seems caught in thought rather than consciously posing. White’s restless line describes her only partially, allowing the unfinished and uncertain to become part of the image.

Dorothy Morris

Ferryside-based artist Dorothy Morris holds a BA (Hons) in Fashion and Textiles and an MA in Fine Art and has exhibited extensively throughout Wales and beyond. Her exhibitions have included the Glynn Vivian, St David's Hall, the National Waterfront Museum, Carmarthenshire Museum and Tenby Museum. She was selected for Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year in 2018 and received an Excellence in Art award from Carmarthenshire Cultural Services in 2022.

Living beside the Towy estuary, water, changing light and the landscape around Ferryside have provided enduring subjects for her work.

Dorothy is also a member of the Oriel Q committee and has submitted these paintings in support of the gallery's fundraising auction.

Andrea Kelland is a longstanding West Wales artist and member of the Royal Watercolour Society of Wales, particularly known for paintings exploring water, coast and the meeting of sea and land. Her Arts Council-supported exhibition The Power of Water and Swell of the Wave toured to MOMA Wales, Taliesin Swansea and Oriel Q, which has also presented a major retrospective spanning sixty years of her work.

In Blue Pool, layered blue washes and sharply preserved passages of light transform moving water and rock into an image poised between landscape and abstraction.

Haverfordwest River View — Liz Tobin

West Wales artist Liz Tobin lived in Spain for some twenty years before returning to Wales. Her paintings combine an enthusiasm for vibrant colour with subjects drawn from the towns, coast and countryside of Pembrokeshire. Working in oil, acrylic, watercolour and digital media, she moves between observation and abstraction.

Haverfordwest and its river have been recurring subjects in Tobin's work. Here the familiar townscape is transformed through vigorous impasto, simplified architecture and intense passages of blue, giving the river and sky an almost physical presence.

A vibrant, rhythmic abstraction built around recurring circular forms — a motif associated in Graham's work with wholeness and the cycles of nature. Sweeping crimson forms, brilliant yellows and repeated circles give the painting an exuberant sense of movement.

Rosemary Graham is a Pembrokeshire-based mixed-media artist, writer and poet. Her highly intuitive paintings explore colour, texture, rhythm and the emotional energy of the natural world. Working through layers of colour, mark-making, scratching and drawing, she allows paintings to evolve through the process of making rather than from a predetermined image. Graham has exhibited widely throughout Wales and England and has a longstanding association with Oriel Q Gallery.

Diana Heeks is a West Wales artist whose work moves between landscape and abstraction, drawing upon nature, literature, materials and the art and design of eastern cultures. Trained at Birmingham College of Art, she has exhibited at the National Eisteddfod and MOMA Wales and was winner of the 1997 Aspects of Wales prize.

Indian Garden combines layered paper, colour, texture and repeated abstract forms in a carefully constructed composition reflecting Heeks's longstanding interest in eastern visual culture.

Dorothy is also a member of the Oriel Q committee and has submitted these paintings in support of the gallery's fundraising auction.

ee John Phillips is a Pembrokeshire-based artist, illustrator and obsessive draughtsman. The Shed Project began from his late grandfather Handel Jones's tool shed. His grandmother Myrtle had preserved the shed after Handel died in 1994, almost as a mausoleum. Phillips decided to make an illustrated inventory of every object in it.

And “every object” really does mean every object. His rules include drawing every item that can physically be picked up, drawing all the contents of opened packets, leaving sealed packets unopened, and—crucially—drawing every example when there are multiples. He estimates the shed contains more than 100,000 objects and has so far drawn roughly 9,000.

That transforms what might initially look like attractive illustrations of tools into something much more interesting: drawing as archive, memory, family history and archaeology of working-class material culture.

His grandfather was a coal miner and engineer, and Phillips has described the 9 × 9 ft shed as embodying his post-industrial South Wales mining heritage and the post-war ethos of “make do and mend.”

Irony — Geoff Yeomans (1934–2021)

Geoff Yeomans, affectionately known as “Geoff the Rust”, was a painter, printmaker, photographer and influential art teacher who made his home in West Wales. A prolific exhibitor and member of the Royal Cambrian Academy, his work frequently explored weathered, eroded and corroded surfaces, particularly those associated with ships, rocks and the coast.

Irony is a unique etching whose richly worked blue-green and ochre surface has the appearance of something simultaneously printed, painted and weathered by time.

Yeomans had a longstanding connection with Narberth and undertook an artist residency at Queen's Hall in 1996.

An accomplished panoramic watercolour in which Millard reduces the landscape to washes, stains and a handful of precisely judged marks. Areas of almost untouched paper become water and sky, while distant birds and loosely painted vegetation create a remarkable sense of space and atmosphere.

Katie Millard is a British watercolourist whose work is particularly associated with the landscape and coast of East Anglia. Her direct approach to watercolour — working without preliminary pencil drawing and allowing the medium its characteristic spontaneity — gives her landscapes their distinctive balance between observation and abstraction.

A richly layered abstract in which brilliant yellow, red and green emerge through passages of deep blue and black. Gestural painting and drawn marks create a sense of movement around a mysterious central form — somewhere between landscape, shelter and imagined space.

Rosemary Graham is a Pembrokeshire-based mixed-media artist, writer and poet. Her highly intuitive paintings explore colour, texture, rhythm and the emotional energy of the natural world. Working through layers of colour, mark-making, scratching and drawing, she allows paintings to evolve through the process of making rather than from a predetermined image. Graham has exhibited widely throughout Wales and England and has a longstanding association with Oriel Q Gallery.

Raphaelle Fieldhouse is a Welsh multidisciplinary artist with an international reputation in body painting and theatrical and media make-up. A twice World Bodypainting Champion, she has worked across television, performance and live body art as well as drawing and mixed-media practice. Her work combines exceptional observational drawing with an interest in the body as both subject and artistic surface. She is currently artist-in-residence at Rhosygilwen in West Wales.

Hilary Bryanston (b.1951) is a Welsh-based painter and sculptor working across painting, carved wood and stone, ceramics and assemblage. Trained at Newport College of Art, she has exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions at Chapter Arts Centre, Wolverhampton Art Gallery, Neath Museum & Art Gallery and the Midlands Arts Centre, Birmingham. Her highly individual work draws on landscape, mythology, symbolism and an imagined inner world, often combining painting with carving and incised marks. Bryanston has a longstanding association with Oriel Q, which has previously presented a dedicated exhibition of her work.
