In 1911 Douglas Mawson organised and led the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) - a scientific investigation of the Antarctic on a scale never before considered. Famous Polar explorers, Roald Amundsen, the future conqueror of the South Pole and Dr. Frederick Cook, who already explored much of the Arctic with Commander Robert Peary and who later claimed to be the first to reach the North Pole.

Georges Lecointe was appointed first officer (and therefore second in command) on board Belgica. Lecointe was also responsible for hydrography , depth-soundings and charting.

This was a multi-national expedition – Belgian, Norwegian, Polish, an American doctor and a Romanianzoologist. With such a diverse crew and almost a year stuck in the ice there were problems aplenty. That all ended well was due largely to four men – Amundsen, Cook, Lecointe and de Gerlache himself. Lecointe’s book is perhaps the most readable of all accounts of the voyage.

Andrew Taylor, the field commander of Operation Tabarin was one of the forgotten heroes of Antarctic exploration. Early in 1944 nine men landed on a tiny, barren island off the west coast of the Graham Land Peninsula in Antarctica. Armed with only a small assortment of rifles and pistols and with an obsolete 12-pounder mounted on the bows of their decrepit supply vessel, their official purpose was to prevent German U-boats and surface raiders from using Antarctic and sub-Antarctic harbours for refuelling and resupply. Unofficially, they were tasked with reasserting British territorial rights in the face of increasingly confident incursions by neutral Argentina.

This two-year expedition, code-named Operation Tabarin, was the precursor to the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey and the present-day British Antarctic Survey, and the arrival of the nine British and Commonwealth soldiers, sailors and scientists marked both the beginning of Britain’s permanent presence on the Antarctic continent and the commencement of a complex programme of scientific research and exploration which continues to this day. Written in 1947 by the man who ultimately became Operation Tabarin’s commander-in-the-field, this is the only contemporary account to cover the expedition’s entire two-year history. Frank Wild is a name well known to anyone interested in the history of Polar exploration. He was one of only two men — along with Ernest Joyce— to earn the Polar Medal with four clasps. He was also the only man to serve in the Antarctic under the British Empire’s three greats—Scott, Shackleton and Mawson. This book, however, is not a biography, but rather a chance to view Wild’s role and accomplishments from his own writings — his diary kept during the Southern Journey of Shackleton’s BAE, his sledging diary from Mawson’s expedition, and his report to Mawson about the operations of the AAE’s Western Base, which he commanded in 1912—13. These have been quoted in other works, but they have never been published before in their entirety.
It is thought that Wild did keep other diaries, but these have not come to light.

The two diaries included here are the only two diaries of Wild known with certainty to be extant.

Harrisson, Kennedy and Watson were all members of Mawson's Western party led by the legendary Frank Wild, the only person to be awarded the Polar medal with four bars.

Charles Harrisson was the biologist on Mawson’s expedition who was also an enormously talented painter. He charted the life of the Western Party through his paintings and drawings. In 1914 he tragically lost his life when the ship he was on was returning from Macquarie Island and was lost with all hands.

The fourth book is a short biography of Harrisson.

In 1957 on the Antarctic Plateau Sir Edmund Hillary, the great New Zealand mountaineer, raced his expedition leader, Vivian Fuchs, to the South Pole for reasons that were never fully explained. Hillary’s spin was that the Pole was there and he had time and fuel to get there first: so he did.

Hillary’s actions threw Fuchs’ Trans Antarctic Expedition into confusion. When he then suggested that Fuchs halt his march across Antarctica at the Pole and return a year later to complete the historic crossing, Hillary appeared to be approaching a state of mutiny on the ice: he was roundly criticised by many interested in Antarctic affairs, except that at home in New Zealand his spin took root and has never been vigorously challenged.

Examining records that could more fully explain why Hillary acted as he did took the writer into part of the history of the TAE: the part that somehow had escaped close examination for around half a century.

When the New Zealand Prime Minister heard that Hillary was to go on the expedition he remarked: "Edmund Hillary climbed Everest, they think he can climb the South Pole too."

Frank Debenham was a member of the scientific staff on Scott’s 1910 expedition. He conceived the idea for a Polar Institute whilst sitting in Shackleton’s hut at Cape Royds and after the death of the polar party he campaigned for a living memorial to Scott. On 26th November 1920 the Scott Polar Research Institute came into being and Frank Debenham was its first director.

When he returned from the Antarctic in 1913 he resolved not to publish any reminiscences but at the urging of many friends he published, in 1952, IN THE ANTARCTIC which deals chiefly with the three years he spent there. The book has extensive illustrations which the author hopes ‘...may convey something of the spirit of harmony which reigned in that crammed but cosy hut forty years ago’.

IN THE ARCTIC, which was first published in 1997, was written in Deb’s retirement as his way of remembering some of the people—explorers, staff, research students—who passed through his tenure as a Director of SPRI. These delightful stories are a mixture of facts and fantasy, some poignant, some amusing but all delightful.

THE ANTARCTIC DIARY OF ARCHIBALD LANG MCLEAN - Edited and with an introduction by Beau Riffenburgh. 1st Edition.

Archibald Lang McLean was a graduate in Arts and Medicine at Sydney University who in 1911 applied to join Douglas Mawson’s Australasian Antarctic Expedition as the expedition’s doctor and bacteriologist. On the expedition he studied the effects of the Antarctic environment on other members of the expedition, taking regular blood samples and skin swabs.

From the beginning, McLean distinguished himself by his willingness to engage in hard manual labour, a trait that showed itself again on Macquarie Island, during the period when the base and wireless station were set up. He also carried out medical tests and examinations. He was the first to demonstrate that hair and nail growth decrease in the Antarctic, due to the cold, which causes vasoconstriction. He also was the first in the Antarctic to describe his methods of measuring haemoglobin, cell counts, and blood pressure. In fact, it has been suggested that through this work he laid the foundations for modern physiological research in the Antarctic.
When Aurora returned to collect the expedition, Mawson, Ninnis and Mertz had not come back from their sledging expedition and McLean volunteered to stay and if necessary search for Mawson.

On 8 February Aurora sailed, leaving the small party behind. Within hours of the ship’s departure, Mawson returned in terrible physical condition, bearing with him the tragic tale of the deaths of Ninnis and Mertz. A wireless message was sent to Davis, asking him to come back to pick up the remaining men but the weather conditions prevented the men on shore from reaching the ship, and Davis eventually made the decision to leave the seven of them at Cape Denison. Mawson, McLean and the others would spend another year at their base.

The story of the second year at Commonwealth Bay was originally told in Mawson’s The Home of the Blizzard. The published primary sources about the second wintering have in the past been the diaries of Mawson and Madigan, two men who often did not see eye to eye. McLean’s contribution therefore adds a valuable perspective.

On the afternoon of 10 November 1912, the Far Eastern Party, consisting of three men and seventeen dogs set off on a sledging trip. The men were Douglas Mawson, Xavier Mertz and Belgrave Ninnis. Two of these men tragically died, and only the leader, Douglas Mawson, returned after what has been described as ‘the greatest survival story in the history of exploration’. Belgrave Edward Sutton Ninnis was born on 22 June 1887. His father had sailed as ship’s surgeon on Discovery on the 1875–76 British Arctic Expedition led by Captain George Nares. It is evident from his diary that the young Ninnis was determined to follow in his father’s steps as a polar explorer though he had enlisted in the Royal Fusiliers. Whilst serving in Africa and Mauritius he made continuous efforts to obtain a position on Scott’s Terra Nova Expedition, but without luck.

Finally he felt he had to return to England on leave to seek interviews with Scott. Inside the diary is the story of a young man and his determined and ultimately successful attempt to become a polar explorer. It is a continuous record, from March 1908 to the final entry on 9 November 1912, though this book concentrates on his Antarctic endeavours. It is also the story of a fairly self-opinionated and arrogant young man who came to be liked and admired by his comrades. From the period of his acceptance on the expedition he focused on the enormity of the challenge ahead, and the diary provides a detailed record of the preparations, the voyage and the expedition itself.

Ninnis forged a strong bond with Xavier Mertz, who was 28, a graduate of Leipzig and Basel universities. He was also a champion skier, which was one of the reasons why Mawson had selected him. The story of Mawson’s epic fight to survive is well known – the story of the other two men is not.

In the mid-nineteenth century the North Pole was a mystery. Some believed that it was an island of basalt in a warm crystal sea. Explorers who tried to penetrate the icy wastes failed or died. But after Sir John Franklin disappeared with all his men in 1845, serious efforts began to be made to find the true northernmost point of the globe. Fergus Fleming’s book is a vivid, witty history of the disasters that ensued. The new explorers included Elisha Kane, a sickly man and useless commander, who led his team close to death in 1854, and Charles Hall, a printer from Ohio. Hall made the mistake of taking an experienced crew, who refused to commit suicide for him. Their mutiny so enraged Hall that he died of a stroke, and some of his crew escaped south on an ice floe. They were followed by the Germans, newly united and eager for their place in the ice, the Austro-Hungarians and the British, who in 1876 managed to get further than any other expedition, travelling over terrain later explorers considered impassable. They left the field to the Norwegians, to expeditions organized by the American tabloid press, Swedish baloonists, aristocratic Italians and finally to the obsessive Robert Peary, who on one trip took his pregnant wife with him in order to set a record for the most northerly birth in history. He finally made it in 1909.

The origins of the Third German Antarctic Expedition lie in the aspirations of German scientists to explore and understand the Antarctic environment, and the Nazi Party's drive for self-sufficiency on the road to war. Germany decided to explore the Dronning Maud Land, originally claimed by Norway, and to claim Antarctic territory there for itself. The 1938 expedition, led by Alfred Ritscher, took 16,000 aerial photographs, covering an area of approximately 250,000 square kilometres, dropping darts inscribed with swastikas every 26 kilometres in the process. Germany attempted to claim the territory surveyed by Ritscher under the name New Swabia, but lost its claim to the land following its defeat in the Second World War.

The First French Expedition to the Antarctic set sail in August 1903 under the command of Jean-Baptiste Charcot, the 35-year-old son of a well-to-do neurologist. Charcot did not want to follow in his father’s footsteps, being more interested in a life at sea, but to please him he studied and graduated as a doctor in 1895. His father had died two years earlier, leaving his son with a quite reasonable fortune which gave him the chance to pursue his original interests in the sea and ships. During his disagreements with his father over his choice of career he would always say, when his father objected to his yearning to sail, ‘but why shouldn't I?’, and so was born the name of four of his ships - Pourquoi Pas? The next few years saw him sailing the waterways of France, Holland, England and around Ireland until in 1902 he sailed to Iceland and the Faroes with a commission from the French Naval Ministry. He reached the Arctic Circle and his taste for polar voyaging was established. On his return he commissioned a new vessel to be built, originally naming it Pourquoi Pas? but in June 1903, renaming it Francais.

By this stage, Charcot, though an amateur, had become quite well known as a traveller and explorer, though Captain Scott referred to him - with possibly a touch of disparagement - as ‘the polar gentleman’. When Charcot first decided to sail to the Antarctic he consulted the Belgian, Adrien de Gerlache, who had recently returned from his own voyage in the Belgica. On 15 August 1903 the Francais set sail, with de Gerlache on board, having been persuaded by Charcot to join the expedition. Unfortunately this did not work out and de Gerlache left the ship at the first opportunity. Charcot had designed the ship in such a way that every man could have a private space of his own and he was particularly proud of his choice of comestibles - and wine - and the fact that fresh bread was baked three times a week.

His diary reveals a man of culture and sensitivity. His descriptions of scenery are lyrical and emotionally charged and his sensitivity to the local wildlife was often in stark contrast to many of the other polar explorers of the day. He charted new coasts, undertook scientific work in oceanography, bacteriology, geography, geology and above all meteorology.

This is a fascinating insight into a totally different style of Antarctic exploration and the reader will enjoy the delightful contrast between this expedition and others generally portrayed as more serious.

As the world knows, Blake was tragically murdered by river pirates in December 2001 while exploring the Amazon. This book tracks that voyage and at the same time pays homage to this extraordinary man. The SEAMASTER voyage began in New Zealand and ascended to 70?? S in the icy waters of Antarctica, then headed north to the rain forests of the Amazon. The ship ultimately sailed approximately 1,000 miles up the Amazon river before Blake was murdered on the return journey.
