This Haut-Médoc property, separated from Saint-Julien only by a small stream, was awarded its fifth-growth status thanks to the quality of its deep gravel soil. It had become run down to just 20 hectares of higgledy-piggledy vineyards when the négociant Dourthe took over its management in 1979.

The property began as a highly reputed hunting lodge in the eighteenth century. The vines which now surround the lodge did not come until the early 1800s, but the estate’s hunting origins are still an important part of Belgrave’s identity: not only is there a ferret on the label, but the estate’s second wine, Diane de Belgrave, is named after Diana, the Roman goddess of hunting.

The vineyards now cover 59 hectares planted across two small hills. The gravel-rich soils at their peak are ideal for cabernet sauvignon, whereas towards their base the gravel is mixed with sandy clay, which suits merlot very well.

There have been significant renovations to both the cellar and vineyards since Dourthe took over, most recent of which, in 2004, was a new winery and barrel hall. Belgrave is a blend of 51% merlot, 40% cabernet sauvignon, 5% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot. After fermentation takes places in a mix of stainless steel and wooden vats, the wine ages for 12 months in oak barrels, around 35-45% of which are new.

Dourthe’s hard work began to pay off seriously after about 15 to 20 years and the property now regularly makes claret with body and real quality for keeping – usually for between 8-20 years.

Our daughter, Abby, had two passions in life: the theatre and the designer Kate Spade. She worked as a theatrical set designer, prop maker and armourer in the UK, US and Ireland. In June 2021 Abby was offered her dream job, that of Senior Armourer at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

At the same time she started experiencing gastric problems and was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer despite being super fit and having no previous symptoms. She fought heroically but died suddenly just over a year later in October 2022.

This purse was to be a Christmas present but she died before I could give it to her. She was 38. The purse is a pretty pale lilac colour, is approximately 14cms by 8cms and has been kept in tissue paper.

I started sewing late in life and almost the first thing I made was an Advent Calendar for my niece, Richelle. She was already a teenager by then so I added small cosmetic items like lip balm and nail varnish instead of chocolate.

A few years later she started experiencing excruciating headaches and was diagnosed with a brain tumour. She underwent months of brutal treatment including radiotherapy, chemotherapy, spinal taps, steroid treatment and five brain operations, but she died nine months later aged 22. Whenever I make an Advent Calendar I think of her. I have added sparkly bits to this one as Richelle loved sparkly things.

He is a serving Army Officer, most recently as an instructor at Infantry Battle School Brecon, he currently is posted to Scotland. He qualified as a summer mountain leader in September 2023.

A very rare opportunity to acquire a piece of aviation aviation engineering and history. A stunning engine fan blade from an A380 aircraft operated most recently by Emirates airline.

The blade was taken from an Engine Alliance GP7270 engine (ESN P550298), which was fitted on A380-800 (MSN 13) operated as A6-EDB when in service with Emirates.

KCRF commissioned the world-renowned Aerotiques of Gloucester, UK, to bring the blade to life in a stunning restoration of its amazing engineering architecture. Now highly polished and sitting on a stable 500mm brushed aluminium base, the blade would make a superb addition to a corporate space or home display – indoors or out.
