Christopher Beesley has 26 years’ experience in sports journalism.

This is a book about baking, but not a baking book – not in the sense of being a manual or a comprehensive guide or a map of a land you do not inhabit. I neither want to confine you to kitchen quarters nor even suggest that it might be desirable. But I do think that many of us have become alienated from the domestic sphere, and that it can actually make us feel better to claim back some of that space, make it comforting rather than frightening.

In a way, baking stands both as a useful metaphor for the familial warmth of the kitchen we fondly imagine used to exist, and as a way of reclaiming our lost Eden. This is hardly a culinary matter, of course: but cooking, we know, has a way of cutting through things, and to things, which have nothing to do with the kitchen. This is why it matters.

The trouble with much modern cooking is not that the food it produces isn't good, but that the mood it induces in the cook is one of skin-of-the-teeth efficiency, all briskness and little pleasure. Sometimes that's the best we can manage, but at other times we don't want to feel like a post-modern, post-feminist, overstretched woman but, rather, a domestic goddess, trailing nutmeggy fumes of baking pie in our languorous wake.

So what I'm talking about is not being a domestic goddess exactly, but feeling like one. One of the reasons making cakes is satisfying is that the effort required is so much less than the gratitude conferred. Everyone seems to think it's hard to make a cake (and no need to disillusion them), but it doesn't take more than 25 minutes to make and bake a tray of muffins or a sponge layer cake, and the returns are high: you feel disproportionately good about yourself afterwards.

This is what baking, what all of this book, is about: feeling good, wafting along in the warm, sweet-smelling air, unwinding, no longer being entirely an office creature; and that's exactly what I mean when I talk about 'comfort cooking'. Part of it too is about a fond, if ironic, dream: the unexpressed 'I' that is a cross between Sophia Loren and Debbie Reynolds in pink cashmere cardigan and fetching gingham pinny, a weekend alter-ego winning adoring glances and endless approbation from anyone who has the good fortune to eat in her kitchen.

The good thing is, we don't have to get ourselves up in Little Lady drag and we don't have to renounce the world and enter into a life of domestic drudgery. But we can bake a little - and a cake is just a cake, far easier than getting the timing right for even the most artlessly casual of midweek dinner parties.

This isn't a dream; what's more, it isn't even a nightmare.

A second play, Long Shadows, starring John Rebus, was co-written with Rona Munro and staged in 2018. There are also a number of novels under the pseudonym ‘Jack Harvey’ and in 2005 he collaborated with singer Jackie Leven on a CD. His non-fiction book Rebus’s Scotland was published in 2005.

Ian Rankin has been elected a Hawthornden Fellow, and is also a past winner of the Chandler-Fulbright Award. He is the recipient of four Crime Writers’ Association Dagger Awards including the prestigious Diamond Dagger in 2005. In 2004, Ian won America’s celebrated Edgar Award for Resurrection Men. He has also been shortlisted for the Edgar and Anthony Awards in the USA, and won Denmark’s Palle Rosenkrantz prize, the French Grand Prix du Roman Noir and Germany’s Deutscher Krimipreis.

Ian Rankin is also the recipient of honorary degrees from the universities of Hull, Abertay, St Andrews and Edinburgh as well as The Open University. In 2019, he donated his archive of over 50 boxes of manuscripts, letters and paperwork to the National Library of Scotland.

A regular contributor to BBC2’s Newsnight Review, he also presented his own TV series, Ian Rankin’s Evil Thoughts on Channel 4 in 2002 and Rankin on the Staircase for BBC Four in 2005. In 2007, Rankin appeared in Ian Rankin’s Hidden Edinburgh and Ian Rankin Investigates Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde also for BBC Four. Ian has been the subject of ITV’s South Bank Show and BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs where his choice of music included Joy Division, The Rolling Stones and Van Morrison.

Ian has received an OBE for services to literature, opting to receive the prize in his home city of Edinburgh, where he lives with his wife and two sons.

About the author

Born in London, Liz Harris graduated from university with a Law degree, and then moved to California, where she led a varied life, from waitressing on Sunset Strip to working as secretary to the CEO of a large Japanese trading company.

Six years later, she returned to London and completed a degree in English, after which she taught secondary school pupils, first in Berkshire, then Cheshire, and finally in Oxfordshire.

In addition to her 29 published novels, she’s had several short stories in anthologies and magazines. Liz now lives in Windsor, Berkshire. Amanda Mason was born and brought up in Whitby, North Yorkshire. She studied Theatre at Dartington College of Arts, where she began writing by devising and directing plays. After a few years of earning a very irregular living in lots of odd jobs, including performing in a comedy street magic act, she became a teacher and has worked in the UK, Italy, Spain and Germany. She now lives in North Yorkshire and has given up teaching for writing.
Her short stories have been published in various anthologies, and she is the author of two novels, THE WAYWARD GIRLS (2019) and THE HIDING PLACE (2021).

I am a freelance travel journalist and author living in the South of France with my husband, cat and chickens. We moved from London in 2009 so that our children could grow up bilingual and we could all ski more, and to enjoy a more relaxed pace of life.

I'm an avid thriller reader and have been since I discovered Agatha Christie as a child.

In the 1946 21,000 children in England and Wales were adopted compared to around 3,000 in 2024. From 1949 to 1967 there were 100,000 Forced Adoptions. Between 1899 and 1967, 100,000 children were sent abroad from the United Kingdom to Canada, Australian and New Zealand - many from Liverpool which was one of the main departure cities. Over the years I’ve lived and worked in London, Exeter, New York and Delaware, and am now living close to where I grew up in Sevenoaks, Kent.

I’m best known for The Adventurers Series, featuring a group of children and their Border collie as they travel everywhere from Cornwall to Cairo in search of treasure, adventure and fun! The series has been translated into Estonian, Finnish, Polish and Spanish to date, and won the inaugural Children’s Selfies Award in 2020.

In 2023 Secrets at No.6 was released: the first book in my new mystery series set in Edwardian London.

Previously in 2021 my first non-Adventurers book, The Treasure of Tea Towers, was published by Klett Sprachen in Germany.

Reading has always been one of my favourite things to do; during reading hour at primary school I would become so absorbed in imaginary worlds that at the end my name would have to be called several times before I’d notice! One teacher even arranged a hearing test for me! (My hearing was fine – my listening skills, not so much!)

A good book becomes like an old friend, being revisited again and again. I hope to entertain young readers with adventures and laughs to enjoy alongside the characters.

Having gathered all 12 of the 16/87s – those who slip through time on each full moon – together, Jess still feels alone. It seems each of their lives are falling apart, and she still doesn’t know what to do with the information they found out from the timeslip.

Jess also doesn’t know what role ‘The Chronos Club’ is going to play, other than their members all experience full moon disappearances too, with each group born a decade before the next.

Dieter from the 15/44s seems to be the key, but Jess has no idea how the pieces of the jigsaw fit together.
