to Home-Start Merton’s 30th Anniversary Ball Silent Auction.
Merton is known across the world as the borough that hosts the famous Wimbledon
tennis championships but step just a short distance away from the grounds there
are areas of considerable deprivation with many families struggling to cope
with their young children and family lives. Parents dealing with issues such as
mental health, isolation, loneliness, financial problems, unemployment, illness
and disability.
Home-Start Merton has a network of trained volunteers, parents themselves, many
of whom are here tonight, who work across the borough giving one to one support
to families when they need it most. Each year they need around £180,000 to
operate. They are not supported by any statutory organisations and they cover
their running costs through applying for grants and funding from charitable
bodies, trusts, foundations and other companies.
One-off events, like tonight, can make a huge difference to what they can
achieve in the local area so please bid generously on our fantastic auction
lots or make a pledge directly to the charity on the auction platform. Every
penny will go towards supporting vulnerable families, helping to shape a
community where no parent or family feels alone in the challenging task of
raising children.
We are a group of local mums who have come together to help other parents in
our borough and we hope that you will be enticed by the vast array of fantastic
prizes we have gathered.

Bob Bell, Strategy Advisor to Alpine, is a legend in motorsport and widely recognised as one of the most influential Technical Directors in the F1 paddock. He joined McLaren in 1988 and held senior technical positions at McLaren, Benetton Formula, Jordan Grand Prix, Renault and Alpine. Bob was notably instrumental in developing the Mercedes GP car which dominated the F1 World Championship with the advent of Hybrid Power Units.
Bob will take you to places that not even Drive to Survive gets to see at Alpine’s top-secret headquarters at Enstone, north-west of Oxford. There, you’ll get to see cars and trophies from the Enstone team’s past, together with a tour of the current manufacturing and technology facilities that are necessary for a successful F1 team.

Wimbledon Museum’s first ever Photographer in Residence, Shamani was born in Malaysia and prior to moving to the UK resided in Australia for several years. She lives with her family in Wimbledon and is a keen photographer. She has always been interested in taking photos but became passionate about photography in 2020, during the pandemic, whilst on solitary walks with her beloved dog Flint.
Shamani sees photography as a way to capture a unique moment, never to be repeated, different from the time before and different from the time ahead. It allows her to translate her observations visually onto paper so that others may interpret what she has seen. It is often exciting when someone notices something totally different whilst looking at the same subject – a face in a tree, a shape in a shadow, a story in a reflection – and provokes the question “What is it we truly see in front of us?”.
Her work has been exhibited in several galleries in the US and a number of her images have been featured in limited edition photo books. Shamani sees photography as a way to capture a unique moment, never to be repeated, different from the time before and different from the time ahead. It allows her to translate her observations visually onto paper so that others may interpret what she has seen. It is often exciting when someone notices something totally different whilst looking at the same subject – a face in a tree, a shape in a shadow, a story in a reflection – and provokes the question “What is it we truly see in front of us?”.
Her work has been exhibited in several galleries in the US and a number of her images have been featured in limited edition photo books.
