For over a decade now, the reigning consensus has held that the combination of free markets and democracy would transform the third world and sweep away the ethnic hatred and religious zealotry associated with underdevelopment. The Author :
Amanda Lucy Foreman (born 1968) is a British/American biographer and historian. Her books include Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, A World on Fire, and The World Made by Women. The Content :
One of the greatest myths of World War I is that it was a case of "lions led by donkeys," yet there were many strong and powerful leaders who shaped the war for better or worse and this accessible guide takes readers through each of these key figures from all of the major countries involved in the fighting. From Kitchener and his New Army to the Kaiser and the U.S. President, Peter Doyle explains why they were important and how the decisions they made influenced the outcome of the "war to end all wars."
The Author :
Peter Doyle is a geologist with a life-long interest in military history. A specialist studying the role that terrain has had to play in two centuries of warfare, his interests nevertheless extend beyond the scientific. He has written extensively on the British experience of warfare in the two world wars - illustrated with artefacts of those wars. He believes that objects have a tale to tell; he has tried to translate that for the general public.

The Content :
On the outbreak of the Second World War, during the first week of September 1939 over three million people were evacuated. Operation Pied Piper was the largest ever transportation of people across Britain, and most of those moved to safety in the countryside were schoolchildren. Social historian Gillian Mawson has spent years collecting the stories of former evacuees and this book includes the personal memories of over 100, in their own words. Their accounts reveal what it was like to settle into a new home with strangers, often staying for years. While many enjoyed life in the countryside, some escaping inner-city poverty, others endured ill-treatment and homesickness. A fascinating insight into the realities of wartime life, and a valuable oral history of a unique moment in British history.
The Author :
Gillian Mawson has made a particular study of the evacuations of the Second World War. She has organised evacuee reunions, provided research to radio and television documentaries on the subject of evacuation and run a community group for evacuees. She is also the author of two other books on the evacuees. Gillian lives in Whalley Bridge, Derbyshire.

The Content :
What did it feel like to be a woman living in Paris from 1939 to 1949? These were years of fear, power, aggression, courage, deprivation and secrets until - finally - renewal and retribution. Even at the darkest moments of Occupation, glamour was ever present. French women wore lipstick. Why?
It was women who came face to face with the German conquerors on a daily basis - perhaps selling them their clothes or travelling alongside them on the Metro, where a German soldier had priority over seats. By looking at a wide range of individuals from collaborators to resisters, actresses and prostitutes to teachers and writers, Anne Sebba shows that women made life-and-death decisions every day, and, in an atmosphere where sex became currency, often did whatever they needed to survive. Her fascinating cast includes both native Parisian women and those living in Paris temporarily: American women and Nazi wives, spies, mothers, mistresses, and fashion and jewellery designers.
Some women, like the heiress Béatrice de Camondo or novelist Irène Némirovsky, converted to Catholicism; others like lesbian racing driver Violette Morris embraced the Nazi philosophy; only a handful, like Coco Chanel, retreated to the Ritz with a German lover.
In enthralling detail Sebba explores the aftershock of the Second World War and the choices demanded. How did the women who survived to see the Liberation of Paris come to terms with their actions and those of others? Although politics lies at its heart, Les Parisiennes is the first in-depth account of the everyday lives of women and young girls in this most feminine of cities.
The Author :
Anne Sebba is an award-winning British biographer, writer, lecturer and journalist. She is the author of nine non-fiction books for adults, two biographies for children and several introductions to reprinted classics

Hanna Reitsch and Melitta von Stauffenberg were talented, courageous and strikingly attractive women who fought convention to make their names in the male-dominated field of flight in 1930s Germany. With the war, both became pioneering test pilots and both were awarded the Iron Cross for service to the Third Reich. But they could not have been more different and neither woman had a good word to say for the other.
The Author :
Clare Mulley (born 1969) is an award winning biographer.
Clare's first book, The Woman Who Saved the Children: A Biography of Eglantyne Jebb (Oneworld, 2009) won the Daily Mail Biographers’ Club Prize. The Spy Who Loved: The Secrets and Lives of Christine Granville, Britain's first female special agent of the Second World War (Macmillan, 2013) has been translated into several languages, and optioned by Universal Studios. Mulley's third book is The Women Who Flew for Hitler, a joint biography of two extraordinary women at the heart of the Third Reich who ended their lives on opposite sides of history (Macmillan, 2017). Clare contributes to TV and radio for the BBC, ITV, Channel 5 and The History Channel. As well as speaking at most of Britain's major literary and history festivals, Clare has given talks for TEDx at Stormont, the Imperial War Museum, National Army Museum, Special Forces Club and British Library. The Content :
Written with access to previously unpublished records, this is the fullest and most definitive account available on Hitler's secret police, the Gestapo. The book illustrates how, despite its material constraints, this group was able to extend its reach widely and quickly by manipulating and colluding with the general public during World War II, making ordinary German citizens complicit in the rendition of their associates, friends, colleagues, and neighbors. Though it was a powerful institution, it was not an all-powerful institution, and McDonough also relates the fascinating and underreported accounts of a cross-section of ordinary and extraordinary people who opposed the Nazi regime and its oppressive governance.
The Gestapo will provide a chilling new doorway into the everyday life of the Third Reich and give powerful testimony from the victims of Nazi terror, while also challenging popular myths about the Gestapo and its inner workings.
The Author :
Professor Frank McDonough is an internationally renowned expert on the Third Reich. He studied history at Balliol College, Oxford and gained a PhD from Lancaster University. He is the author of several critically acclaimed books, including The Origins of the First and Second World Wars and Hitler, Chamberlain and Appeasement. He has appeared on several TV and radio programs on the BBC, Discovery Channel, National Geographic, and the History Channel. He currently lives in Liverpool, England.

The Content :
e Great War was a key event of the twentieth century and it is one of the most popular and rewarding areas for historical research - and for family historians. More records than ever are available to researchers whose relatives served during the war, and Paul Reed's new book is the perfect guide to how to locate and understand these sources - and get the most out of them. In fascinating detail he follows the stories of twelve service men who fought and died in the Great War - a rifleman, an infantry officer, a tunneller, a gunner, a Royal Marine, a naval rating, an airman, and others. He describes their wartime careers and shows how they fitted into the armed forces. He looks at what they did, at their lives in the front line, in the rear areas, on leave, and at the conditions they endured and the experiences they had. And he demonstrates how the research was done and how the lives of these individuals were reconstructed - the methods that were used, the sources that were consulted. Paul Reed's informative and accessible book will be essential reading and reference for anyone who wants to find out about the Great War and is keen to understand the part an ancestor played in it.
The Author :
Paul Reed is a leading military historian, specializing in the two world wars. He has been visiting European battlefields for more than thirty years, and lived on the Somme for over a decade. He has worked as a researcher and battlefield guide, and is the author of several books on the Great War. He also regularly contributes to television programmes, such as Timewatch, Meet the Ancestors and Who Do You Think You Are? and was historical consultant to BBC1's My Family At War.
